Good Essay On Dukes Fact Sheet
Description:
DUkes is a student campus organization at Drury University (located in Springfield, Missouri) in which students and faculty adviser and communications professor Dr. Richard Maxson gather weekly to play a unique musical instrument known as the ukulele. What started out as simply a nonchalant hobby with a small group of people has transformed into a popular performance group with 25 members and counting. The DUkes have been requested to perform for churches, community events and local high schools.
Promoting Community:
The zestful ukulele club has drawn a number of students to its cheerful ambiance. Dr. Maxson wanted to create a space for students to enjoy themselves by playing music that would bring them together in camaraderie. Such positive vibes have resulted in growing media coverage for the DUkes who have been featured on the local TV news as well as in print and online media outlets. The club is now fundraising for its first global trip to Japan, slated for August 2015 in which it will represent Springfield Sister Cities in Isesaki, Japan.

Eligibility Requisites:
All Drury students are welcomed to join the musical group at their weekly jam sessions known as “UkeJams”. Skill level does not matter nor does possession of a ukulele. Those wishing to learn how to play the instrument should come to the jam sessions earlier for a beginner tutorial. Please contact Dr. Maxson, the faculty sponsor and founder of the campus club, for more information about joining.
“We really try to reach out to people,” said, Spencer Thompson, president of DUkes, in an article by News-Leader.com. “That’s what it’s all about.”
