Ethylene is used for artificial ripening of fruits and vegetables since it induces nearly all development stages of the plants growth (Arshad and Frankenberger).
Ethylene originates from natural sources, such as natural gas. Modern chemical technology has developed various methods for ethylene production (Engineering and technologies).
It is generally recognized there is no difference in efficiency and safety of the natural and artificially originated ethylene (Vaclavik & Christian). This is true because the chemical structures are identical, and ethylene does not have isomers. However, several issues have to be considered.
When the artificial ethylene is used, several issues have to be taken into account. The product has to be free of impurities that originate from production. The artificially obtained product can contain harmful substances and thus it cannot be safe for application. Hence, the high quality raw products should be used for artificial ethylene; all the standards of the technological method have to be kept to ensure the purity of ethylene.
The sustainability of natural resources has to be considered. If artificial ethylene is produced from secondary resources, the process yield is high, and minimum waste is produced, then the process is sustainable and thus more preferable. If more resources are used for production of the artificial product, then natural ethylene is more preferable. If these conditions are not fulfilled, then the natural ethylene should be preferred.
The economic issues are important as well. In general, the artificial products are more expensive since they require advanced processing. Thus, the natural ethylene originated from natural gas is less expensive.
Although, the natural and artificial ethylene are identical, nowadays there is a concept “nature is perfect”. It states that if natural compound has been applied, the resulting product is more beneficial for nature and people, and more sustainable as well (Islam, Chhetri, and Khan). Basing on this concept, usage of natural ethylene is preferable.
