Portraiture can show not only the appearance of a person but also shows the characteristics and personalities of the person. Different periods have different kinds of the portrait. Ancient Greece and Rome shows the preference of traditional portraiture in sculpture and coins. During the earlier Renaissance period, the artists focused on the portraiture of Christian subjects. Later on, artists turned to show the sitter’s three-quarter face. Artists made portraits for the noble, the rich, and friends, family and also for themselves during the Renaissance and Baroque period (Sorabella). Artists used their advanced painting skills to show us lifelike portraitures.
Both Albrecht Durer and Rembrandt drew self-portraits for themselves. Although the way they work on paintings is different.one of the techniques Rembrandt uses is looser brushwork. Durer’s painting style tighter than Rembrandt’s. They are lifelike. Both of them paid attention to details on composition and light in order to emphasize their face within the dark background. Durer drew his self-portrait when he was 28 years old. He didn’t show any emotion in the painting, but he focused the details on his hair, clothes and the skin tone. His posture in his painting showed he was an artist (pinakothek.de). In contrast, Rembrandt’s self-portrait in 1658 in Baroque period shows his emotions. His face was so serious and anxious. It seems that he might go into the difficult financial problem during his 52 age (Liedtke).
In his self-portrait, Durer’s exhibition is communicating varied themes to his viewers by having himself painted in a picture that looks like that of Christ indicating that God created man in his image and likeness. He looks spiritual, confident and self-conscious. More cheekily, during this time when artists were considered to be great artisans, Durer by lifting his cloth with realm of craft with his right hand in a manner that communicates holding a gift shows that his artistry was a gift from His creator. He reinforced that impression with his selection of clothing, putting on a nobleman's coat during the time when people adhered to strict dress codes that gesticulated their station in life. In addition to those, he added a brandy self-revelatory genre to the artist's repertoire, practically every artist since Durer have made a minimum of one self-portrait at one time or the other.
The rich compilation of the Dutch’s golden heart, the girl with the Pearl Earring, is the major center of the attraction of visitors coming to this museum. The visitors are compelled with this and takes lots of photographs due to the modeling which is not done from that of real girl like that of Mona Lisa and Louvre in Paris despite the fact that she is just enigmatic and fascinating like Mona Lisa. Her mystery and prettiness welcome several talks.
Giovani di Nicolao Arnolfini and his wife exhibits a portrait that is not ideally a real wedding even though it may be mistaken for the same when his wife is kind of giving a hand in marriage. The wife who is holding up her full dress isn’t expectant, and this just elucidates the imagery of couples. There is a reflection in the mirror showing two figures in the doorway and the effects of light with an oil paint allowed Van Eyck to depict it with subtlety in the picture.
