The criminal justice was not modern from day one, but it evolved into an improved system with the passage of time. The early 1970s recorded the most twisting period for the profession. The modern ethical beliefs and principles were integrated as well. The rate of organized crime was growing by then, and the police had to respond to changing trends of the society by introducing the force of formalization in its structure. The criminology emerged as well celebrated and recognized science.
The establishment of Law Enforcement Assistance Administration (LEAA, forerunner of the Bureau of Justice Assistance) novelized the civic side of the work that detectives and agents have to perform in order drive down the crime rate. The organizational structure of the police was traditionalized because the Italian gangs were more than active in those days. In America, the crime rate dropped significantly in response to the changes. However, the nation faced a different level of threat after 9/11 attacks. The terrorism had a unique nature as a crime, and it had a global reach as well. Secondly, the terrorism had an immense capability to damage human life. The role of Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) came into spotlight, and the American agents are fighting violent factions in all parts of the world so that they do not develop the power to attack the Americans another time.
The ethical perspective of law enforcement grew weaker when the agencies had to deal with global challenge of terrorism, and therefore, those who face allegations of terrorism do not enjoy the basic civil rights granted by Bill of Rights. One can argue that a lot has changed after attacks on Twin Towers.
