Privacy
Government has the responsibility of enforcing the law it sets down for its citizens. Therefore, the recent controversy of monitoring of citizens phone and email communication is a serious invasion of their privacy and goes against their fundamental rights. As long as the mobile phones are switched on, they register their positions with the cell towers in every given duration regardless of whether they are in use or not. Since most of the mobile providers retain the location details of their customers, government officials can gain access to detailed information on the personal details about someone by accessing their history location from their cell phone providers or companies ("NSA scandal: what data is being monitored and how does it work? | US news | The Guardian," n.d.).
In the past, law enforcement has had to follow easy standards provided for by the legal authorities to acquire information or data on the phone calls that individuals make or receive. As much as the government claims that, the monitoring schemes are necessary to defend against terrorist threats. It has not cited any terrorist threat that was thwarted by the use of these schemes. It is therefore still unclear what the schemes intend to achieve other than invading into innocent peoples’ lives ("NSA Spying | Electronic Frontier Foundation," n.d.).
People still do not yet understand the full implications of a world in which governments can monitor and track citizens at all times. There can never be such things in private life anymore because no text message or email one send can go undetected and unread, and there is nowhere one can go without government monitoring their location. In my opinion, the act of monitoring the citizen’s mobile phones and email is an intrusion into the private lives of the citizens and a barrier to the enjoyment of their right to privacy and the scheme should, therefore, be scrapped off.
