I used not to pay attention to my clothes. I wore anything anywhere. However when I began looking for a job I meet several refusal without any reasonable explanation. Only when read Tony Peregrin’s article “Clothes Call: Professional Image Can Have a Big Impact on Your Career”, I finally found what is the matter: my image.
Especially I was surprised with the survey conducted by CareerBuilder.com because the results showed that almost 41% out of 2.765 employees believe that those who dress more professional are likely to be promoted more often. Such a result made me rethink the role that wearing is as important as education or work experience. Now I understand that clothes form an initial impression, which is extremely important in communication. It affects how people treat you no matter what you say or do. Thus, I think my future job search will be more successful.
However there is something I would like to disagree with. The article provides that patients measure their physicians’ competency by clothes. The same is with pediatrics, clinical workers, those working at public work or having an interview and I do agree with it because now I better understand why it is so. However, this approach, to my mind, relates only to work or activity which requires face-to-face communication. Programmers, laborers and tradesmen, for instance, can wear whatever they want. They have no one to make an impression on, so clothes should be first of all comfortable.
Re-examining of my view on professional image was quit long, but now it’s done. I am full with my past failures, so now I want omit previous mistakes and begin to build my professional career.
Three questions that have arisen for me as a result of the reading:
Can professional image be important for people whose work is not related to face-to-face communication?
What are the main reasons for people not to care about their image?
Why do people tend to judge people by their image?
What do you see as your biggest challenge as you transition from student to professional? How will you address this challenge?
