Refutation paragraph, in simple words, is a paragraph written in order to encapsulate the views and arguments of the opposing side. It saves the author from sounding intolerant and unbiased and it adds credibility to the author’s point of view and it is an additional value to the moral standing of the author as well. A writer must take care that the refutation paragraph must not be more persuasive that the original arguments of the writer. The best place to put a refutation paragraph is right after the thesis and before the main body paragraph. In this paragraph, writer summarizes the viewpoints of the other side and this acknowledgment would add credibility to his own views. The author recognizes parts of the arguments of the other side that are legitimately valid and sound. It is a good practice to counter the opponent’s weak points with his own strongest points. Finally, the writer has to add a rebuttal telling his readers why the opponents’ points do not hold water or why the writer’s own points are the one that really matters.
It is quite right that the refutation paragraph is a very valuable addition to the research paper and the argumentative essay genre. The inclusion of the opponent’s point of view does help the author. It gives the reader the impression that the author is making a genuine effort to reach a conclusion instead of deceiving the reader. It provides both ethical and logical credibility to the points of the author. It brings the professional and unbiased persona of the writer in front of his readers. It affixes veritable academic values to the paper of the writer and all these benefit indubitably make the refutation paragraph an essential element of modern research and argumentation.
On a personal note, a refutation paragraph is indeed a very handy tool which gives the author an air of professionalism. But like all other tools it is beneficial only if properly used. If a writer poorly summarizes his opponent’s views or if he fails to properly and strongly refute his opposing side’s arguments than the refutation paragraph would do more harm than good. Personally, I find it a very useful rhetorical instrument to be had in the armory of a good writer and it would most certainly have a very positive impact on my future writings.
