Rural poverty and health have been an important issue in both the developed as well as the developing nations. Lack of proper infrastructure, education, mobility, unemployment and various other traditional and cultural factors contribute to poverty in rural areas. Many studies have been made on rural poverty and health. It is stated that the health of rural population is worse than in urban areas.
Rural Health Status: people in rural areas depend on lands with low productivity and are exposed to degradation. (Oxford Journals, Rural health around the world: challenges and solutions). The resources are concentrated in the urban areas and the limitations in accessing the resources is noted as a major issue. Many people face low productivity and ill health in the rural areas. The World Health Organization has taken initiative to improve rural health and living through different programs. They focus on improving basic health, sustainable livelihoods and access to all opportunities.
Causes and consequences of poverty: Family structures, unemployment, low wages, are the important causes for poverty. Education is at a lower level (Litcher 1993).Additional hours does not have any effect on poverty in the rural areas. With the rural health and poverty problems existing in a country the overall development of the country is affected as well as it has a negative impact on the society as a whole.
Conclusion: A country has to focus on rural development for its overall development. Rural development programs should be effective and need to be focused on particular issues like health, education and infrastructure etc. Poverty, sickness, and low productivity cause a downward movement in rural areas which has to be stopped. Physical and natural resources need to be preserved.
