Good Essay On Self-Awareness Through Art-Discussion
Self-portrait is an art that an artist uses to represent oneself, the first self-portrait ever known was created by Bek. A portrait is an image of the likeness of a person and puts emphasis on personal attributes. Some of the earliest portraits, which still exist are the portraits found in Fayum, Egypt. The portraits depict natural qualities like gracefulness and exhibit life-like characteristics. The characteristics depicted by different portraits are highly individualistic in nature, like the Fayum portrait.
The Fayum portrait tends to show a woman who is graceful and well poised. It is very specific, as it tends to show the particular characteristics of the woman portrayed as opposed to being tough and perhaps being strong. The human portrait has enhanced my self-awareness in perceiving and understanding the things around me. It has changed my perception towards the world and its people; it has helped me to understand people better, my shortcomings and has helped me in relating better with people. The portrait has also enhanced my virtues, imagination, sympathy and tolerance of other people. Accordingly, the artwork has enabled me to reach beyond my experiences. I can be able to see things from another artist’s point of view, and try to imagine what they were rethinking while drawing that art.
Also, from viewing the artwork I have learnt a lot about the community and I can imagine different worlds that are different in space and times. I can relate to other people, and how they feel and what they are probably going through, hence I can relate with them to some extent. Looking at the funerary portrait, I can relate to some extent with the portraits’ emotion. The portrait does not seem happy or emotional; the portrait shows a calm and collected person. As I look at the portrait, it makes me feel calm, pitiful and sorrowful as I look at the portrait.
The artworks that describe the human form have made me learn that human beings are not the same, and community varies from place to place. Hence, I should relate differently depending on where I am. Also, the art has helped me appreciate the diversity, and understand that we are different, and we all exhibit different characteristics, hence the need to understand how we should relate to those around us. To sum up, art has a special way of shifting someone’s perception into seeing things in a different way. Sometimes a person’s perception is shifted, and one can perceive things the way an artist does.
