Every company has to set goals and procedures for the expectations of their employees. Companies that force development on their employees and use high development work practices are more successful. A 1995 study showed, “considerable support for the hypothesis that investments in such [high development] practices are associated with lower employee turnover and greater productivity and corporate financial performance” (Huselid 667). People who are being challenged at work tend to enjoy their work more.
Of course, “not all employees possess knowledge and skills that are of equal strategic importance” (Lepak & Scott 31), so some employees may claim to be happy where they are and that they do not want to learn more or move up in the company. This is not acceptable. An employee who has no interest in growing with the company is not invested in the company. They are more likely to leave, or to be less productive. Not only that, more pay should be a result of more skills and a higher value to the company. Therefore an employee who does not want to grow or be promoted is going to make less than others who have been there less time, and will eventually grow resentful.
