The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Spain, 1997
Frank Gehry, the American - Canadian architect had created the design of this unusual museum of Modern Art. It opened to the public in 1997 and was immediately recognized as one of the most spectacular buildings in the world.
In developing the project, Gehry used a system of computer-aided design, technological preparation of production and engineering analysis (CATIA); the computer simulation has made possible the details which would never have been achieved by the architects of the generations before.
The museum was built in the city port and its shapes look like a Martian house. From some angles, the building resembles a full-blown flower. Structure lines are randomly curved to capture more sunlight. The main part of the building was made in the style of Deconstructivism.
The ground work of the building was made of monolithic concrete and steel reinforcement. The frame was constructed of metal profiles and lined with reflective titanium plates. The total area of the lining is about 24,000 square kilometers.
The Guggenheim Museum has become a real monument of the Deconstructivism architecture. For anyone who wants to get acquainted with this architectural style there will be enough to stand nearby.
Burj Khalifa, United Arab Emirates, 2010
The building is the tallest one in the world. In the process of its construction the designed height was kept in a top secret. The height of the building is about 828 m, it has 163 floors. About $ 1.5 billion were spent for the full construction.
The structure has been made in the style of Modernism and there are also futuristic details.
Burj Khalifa has become the tallest building in the world and it can be safely called the Babel tower of a New Time. Burj Khalifa is considered as the 7th marvel of the Arabian architecture.
Beijing National Stadium, China, 2008
After the opening, this piece of architecture at the same moment became the monument of the new types of stadiums and the most perspective project in the Olympic Games history.
The stadium has the form of a "crow's nest", which means all the best and great in Chinese culture. Its concept has been created to promise that it would become a symbol of happiness and love. The Chinese called it the house of a new standards and leaderboards.
The stadium consists of twenty columns which are represented by a grid of triangular or a square cross-section, separated by a number of the metal bridges. These columns were used to reduce the wind resistance and to make the construction light and at the same time stable. The Chinese engineers have created a new type of steel for building the stadium.
The roof of the stadium opens automatically according to the weather conditions. The whole area of the building is about 260.000 sq. m and it can accommodate more than 90.000 people. The external design is highly streamlined and compact. Basic material is an extra light steel.
The shape of the stadium has a high-tech parts combined with the national symbols. Such a symbiosis in architecture is called neo-ethnic.
The Gateshead Millennium Bridge, UK, 2001
The Millennium Bridge is the first transformer bridge in the world. The architects wanted to create a foot and cycling bridge that would be able to gate through the small ships. The construction of this bridge was the biggest engineering plan. It`s budget was about $ 40 million; the construction lasted 2 years. Its steel structure were difficult to transport but the workers used one of the biggest cranes (Hercules) in the world to do it. The Millennium Bridge was opened in 2001. It consists of two semicircular parts, one of which rises over the water surface, the other at this time moving foot and cyclists roads so there is a place for passing the low ships under it.
When a large ship is coming to the bridge, both parts transform to make a special place according to the individual parameters of every ship. The transformation lasts about 5 minutes. The design of the Millennium Bridge is an example of what should be the next generation of bridges. The bridge consists not only of the modern details it also transforms each attached city areas, making them the part of the future.
