Good Essay On The Role Of Women, Indian Tribes, And Freed Slaves In America’s Civil War

During the war, the Union and Confederacy adopted different methods through which they hoped to win. The recruitment of freed slaves, women, and even the Indian tribes provide an excellent example of each side accepting received help in different degrees. Thus, the United States underwent various social transformations during the war, where white man’s supremacy failed.
Foremost, the white man’s society revolutionized drastically with white women assuming the positions once solely allocated to the men. For instance, demand for soldier’s uniforms and other provisions encouraged women to work in industries (Kennedy, Cohen, and Bailey 2008, 449). Others gained employment in government offices with some working in the Treasury Department (Kennedy, Cohen, and Bailey 2008, 449). Within the battle lines, the roles played by white women and the other groups took a more dangerous turn. For the women, some impersonated male soldiers with the aim of following their loved ones into war while other turned spies for their desired side (Kennedy, Cohen, and Bailey 2008, 449). Among the Indian tribes, their unpleasant history with the United States’ government and being slave owners encouraged alliances with the Confederacy (Dunbar 2011, 5). Thus, Indian warriors would attack Union settlements and raid them for provisions and weapons to aid the Confederate soldiers. Finally, slaves were undoubtedly for the abolitionists’ cause; thus, freed slaves rapidly moved to the North and enlisted in the Union Army. However, as Lincoln initially understood secession as the reason of the war, freed slaves enlisted in the Union army as the war ended (Kennedy, Cohen, and Bailey 2008, 439).
Evidently, the Civil War was for all of United States’ inhabitants, regardless of color and gender.
