Winning through innovation by Michael L. Tushman & Charles A. O’Reilly is a book that seeks to equip one to understand the dynamics that large organizations undergo and the habit these organizations have of being perfect in only one aspect, hindering them from accepting change and getting stuck in the past. The authors argue that many companies rely on their past stories of success, forgetting the emerging issues that take place in the market (Tushman et al. 76). Rather than strategize on their next moves to remain on top of the game, they concentrate on the past, making their success short-lived as they are eventually outdone by other organizations that are more focused on the future. When this is the case, the position they hold in the market is easily challenged and with time, overtaken by competitors who were otherwise not famous. The main point that the authors emphasize throughout the book is the role of innovation in the current market. In a nutshell, the book gives an explanation on how an organization can obtain the culture of innovation and maintain its position in the market. In the modern economy where innovations and inventions play a major role in determining the position one has in the market, the book gives one a perfect opportunity to learn these dynamics. The cut-throat competition in the market means that no organization can survive without innovation (Tushman et al, 98). The book analyzes these concepts in a manner that is not only simple, but also easy to understand. Through the examples and subsequent explanations that the authors, use, learners and users of the book have h perfect opportunity to understand what is needed. The practicality of the examples given and the relation they have to the day-to-day events also mean that the applicability of the discussed principles is locally learned. To a large extent, this book is beneficial and necessary for any organization.
In business and marketing, tyranny of success is a special name. It can be defined as a way organizations use numbers to manage their long and short term issues. By that it implies that it is the ability of an organization to manage both long-term strategic renewal and short-term advantages effectively. This means the organization will have a deep understanding of the organizational change and the innovation dynamics.
The word ambidextrous means efficiency, more so for people who can use both the right and left hands. An Ambidextrous organization is one that has the ability of being efficient on the day to day management of business and coping with the changing demand of the future times. To achieve this, it is paramount that the organization employs both exploitation and exploration tactics to achieve success. This is the only way the organization can survive over the long term.
In marketing, a congruence model is referred to as a tool through which an organization or a team can effectively identify what is going wrong, thereby designing mechanisms through which to solve such problems. In essence, this model is based on the fact that the performance of an organization is determined by elements such as people, tasks, culture and structure. In determining performance, therefore, this model analyzes how each of the factors involved plays a role. The model is used to analyze performance. To add more, when organizations use such models, then it becomes appropriate to make decisions and define succinct ways to solve or promote their performance techniques. Ideally, every organization has definite models to apply in their day-to-day activities.
In an organization, norms and values refer to aspect that the organization attaches value to. These may include organizational culture and practice that shape the operations in the organization. To a large extent, norms and values influence innovations. The ability of the organization to appreciate the role of innovation is based on the norms and values. Some of the values may include competency and self determination. It is prudently strategic plan to have norms under which organizations must work under. So far, organizations with corrupt individuals are bound to fail and perform poorly in their long as well as short term activities.
Culture can be leveraged for innovation and competitive advantage. A good example on how it can be leveraged is by inculcating good morals to the members of the organization. Some organizational cultures may be in contradiction to innovations. This is detrimental to the organization and needs to be addressed (Tushman et al. 45). To gain competitive advantage, it is paramount that the organization adopts culture that is favorable to cope with the emerging dynamics in business and marketing. This is the only way the organization can remain competitive (Ybema et al. 18).
In most cases, management is seen as a mundane behavior. The fact that competition is high and every competitor doing their best to outdo the rest means that one has to stay focused in order to succeed. With this, one will be forced to cut off a number of social activities at the expense of management. To add on this, competitors may end up employing illegal moves to gain an advantage over their competitors.
Innovation streams play a major role in any business venture. In essence, these refer to innovation patterns that an organization carries over time to create a competitive advantage that is sustainable. Such streams take a number of forms, including technological and social. They are necessary for any organization that wants to succeed in the market.
It is essential to manage contradictions for organizational renewal. Over time, innovations keep on changing. An organization’s approach to certain aspects might be rendered useless in the process. To mitigate for this, the organization ought to reorganize itself and find the best way forward. This can only be achieved through organizational renewal
The political dynamics of change can be managed in a number of ways. The best way, however, entails the organization taking protective measures early enough and to embrace technology. One should also be open to change so as to cope with emerging trends. Politics evolve on a day to day basis. Without keen interest, a business may end up being affected by the policies shaped by the government. A business ought to be keen on this. Insuring a business is one of the few ways of securing a business.
