Rfid is a short form of the radio frequency identification system. Rfid involves the use of electromagnetic fields to transmit data wirelessly. This is a type of technology that is growing at a very fast rate, and soon almost every country in the world will incorporate the technology in its system (Roberti, 2014). Apple is one of the firms that is privileged to use the technology. Apple specializes in the production of gadgets and has embedded this technology in the recently produced devices. The type of Rfid technology that Apple has used is called near field communication. Apple has included NFC technology in iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+. Availability of NFC in these iPhones will enable users to perform various tasks which people with normal smartphone gadgets cannot achieve. These tasks may include making payments and social networking.
Apple pay is one of such applications. The Apple pay application can be accessed securely using the fingerprint recognition system. Apple pay provides a platform where one’s MasterCard is linked with the application. When linked then the user can be able to pay with their iPhone gadgets (Cho, Shim, Kwon, & Choi, 2007). To pay in stores, the users have to hold their iPhone gadgets near a wireless reader with their finger pressed on the touch id on their devices (Roberti, 2014). A vibration informs the customer that payment has been received. For users to link their iPhones with their master cards and be able to use the payment system then their iPhones must have the latest iOS 8.1 updates. Instead of using the actual MasterCard’s numbers Apple assigns a unique number to each device, and this reduces cases of pin theft.
The Apple has also utilized the application of the wireless digital lock doors. Locks of doors are wirelessly connected to NFC-enabled iPhone and other Apple devices. From the devices, the user can lock or open doors at their own free will. The users can also restrict who gets past the door and who doesn’t. If someone tries to break in or hack the locking system, then an alarm is tripped. The alarm can inform the house owners of the intruder. An apple watch also has the capability to be connected to these locks as it also supports the near field communication and will be used as keys for guests in hotels in order to access their rooms.
Checking in an event has been simplified as guests will only need to hold up their phone near a reader, and their personal information will be gathered. Social networking is supported using the digital touch, at places where one can’t be able to talk to the other person due to different factors. Subsequently, then one can be able to send a drawing or a tap (with vibration) to their friends. IPhone 6 has upgraded software. This will enhance in faster connectivity of the internet. IPhone 6 will support Wi-Fi up to three times faster and LTE networks with up to speeds of around 150mb/sec (Cho et al. 2007).
However, the inclusion of this technology in iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+ has restricted developers from using the technology. In normal android gadgets, NFC technology has been used in tasks like; pairing with other Bluetooth devices like speakers or headsets, file sharing and climate controls. These features have not been included, and that’s something that Apple should consider in improving. The NFC technology should also be included in more affordable devices as not many people who can afford iPhone gadgets.
