Forms of extremism and non-tolerance manifest almost all societies in the world, regardless of region, race or socio-economic status. In Muslim majority countries, it happens to be religious fundamentalism, in the Europe it happens to be anti-immigration an in the U.S it happens to be anti-immigration and a variety of forms of racism. Historically, great atrocities have been committed in the name of purism, superiority and a lot of other ideologies. Islam has gained a reputation around the world as a violent religion. It seems that wherever Islam goes, trouble follows in the form of terrorism. Analyzing the sociological basis of terrorism presents a complex challenge as a significant number of factors could be at play. The issue is particularly vulnerable to bias as it is a touchy issue that affects a large part of the world in one way or the other and is tied to religion. Attaining objectivity in the analysis and study of literature and text concerning Islamic extremism is therefore important.
Prevailing theories hold that Islam is a fundamentally violent religion (at least, more violent), that socio-economic oppression and dysfunctional governments in Islamic countries and other regions cause disharmony that uses religion as an outlet. Research shows that there is no empirical evidence showing that there are higher levels of violent crime or politically motivated crime in Islamic Majority countries, except in exceptional cases where alien invasion or civil war is going on. On the other hand, the second theory seems to hold some truth, although it is currently not well investigated and deserves more scrutiny.
If the second hypothesis is true, it would explain the occasional resurgence of racism and anti-immigration in Europe in times of economic stagnation or decline; that resentment and non-tolerance hardly have anything to do with ideology, religious or otherwise.
