There has been flow of immigrants into Koreas over the past few years. This has changed the perception that existed before that South Korea was a homogenous society. There has been influx of people into Koreas due to the shortages in labor in Korea. Industrialization in Korea has been a contributor to the labor shortage that necessitated the influx of immigrants into Korea
Industrialization changed the country from a country sending people to other destinations to a country that receives workers from other destinations. Asia and Korea in particular has been on spot for the rising number of immigrants.
The increased number of immigrants has had its effects on Koreas. The region has become more culturally diverse with the media industry becoming exceedingly multicultural. Television and entertainment shows have become multicultural. This is expected in many ethically heterogeneous societies. Once immigrants establish roots in a region their interests must be taken care of. A population of about 1,000,000 cannot be pushed to the periphery of national affairs. For example the United States media has other cultures accommodated and not just the majority white population.
Multiculturalism and its rise in Korea have brought in a new dimension to the issue of racial politics. The visit by a black born to a Korean woman has changed the whole politics that surrounded race in Korea. The visit by Hines Ward to Korea acted as a game change in the racial politics in Korea. The perceptions were shaped by his visit to Korea in 2006.
Globalization breeds multiculturalism. The agenda to go global in Korea especially in the media sector contributed to the influx of immigrants. The debates on multiculralism have, therefore, not been prominent in Korea because of the belief in the national identity and ethnic purity. However, there is need to rethink through this monolithic cultural ideologies due to the increasing number of immigrants getting into Korea.
The government had resisted the issue of cultural homogeneity in Korea but this had to change due to the increased number of immigrants entering Korea. They government had to change tact and develop policies that embraced multiculturalism. Korea could no longer insist on ethnic purity when the number of immigrants was surging in the country.
The arrival of a black person into Korea changed the whole dimension of multiculturalism. The black race did not fall into the two categories that were recognized in Korea. The Koreans had the Ameriasians and the kosians. However, Hines ward did not fall into either of the categories hence the political significance to Korea.
The visit by Hines Ward was the reason governments change in policy. Discussion on the human rights of other migrants that do not fit in the two categories was heightened in Korea. Government had to change its policy so that it aligned to the new multicultural environment. The visit by Hines was, therefore, a game changer in the protection of the rights of immigrants working in Korea. The government had not considered it important to engage in policy formulation that would lead to the protection of the interests of immigrants in Korea.
The Hines ward issue became national project. The government took on a sensation agenda through commercial media to inform people of the multicultural nature of the Korean society. The government appreciated that it could no longer cling to cultural purity when it was not tenable.
