There is a number of case studies demonstrating the sustainability on the examples of its usage around the world. For instance, a case study on the Library of Birmingham showed an example of a very large building, being over 35,000 m2. It has a structure made of concrete and has already showed itself as very efficient in terms of energy consumption and use.
Owing to the exquisite properties of the material, the building looks grand and has an unforgettable look. In addition, concrete used in constructing this library shows versatility and durability in the use, which is sure to be witnessed even by the next generations of visitors. The last important peculiarity underlined by the case study is the fire resistance of concrete, which is of superior level.
Another case study presents the example of the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool. It is a large and popular place that can accommodate at once 406 visitors. Walls made of concrete are used mainly on the lower floor, which allows for the thermal mass benefits to be exploited to the maximum, which also utilizes the natural ventilation. In this object, there are also used other materials that were recycled, such as shuttering timber and salvaged bricks.
The last case study to be considered is the Aquatics Centre in London, which apart from the use of concrete shows perfect architectural sample. In construction, concrete was used for super-structure and sub-structure, which involve pool tanks, foundations, as well as the diving boards. It is worth mentioning that the Centre exceeded its initial project target in terms of using replacements of cement and recycled and secondary aggregates. The concrete used in the project has allowed meeting performance, technical, aesthetic and sustainability requirements set by the management.
