Two policies that have had an enormous impact on society as a whole have been the Affirmative Action legislation and Roe vs Wade. Both have given individuals rights of society in making critical decisions that ultimately have life-changing outcomes, while being protected under federal laws.
Affirmative Action was initially passed in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy, which provides equal opportunities and treatment for employees regardless of race, creed, religion, or color. The measure was later adapted to include sex. This legislation has been instrumental in giving opportunities to minorities, women, and individuals of all nationalities. Currently, it has amended propositions to the original legislation that reinforces that Affirmative Action should not be favor-minded towards any particular individual or group and should be non-discriminatory. It has proven successful and been instrumental in creating a system of checks and balances to ensure individuals and groups are not singled out or prevented from having the same opportunities as anyone else.
Roe vs Wade case was decided by the Supreme Court in 1973 and has been perhaps the most controversial case to ever be decided. It would become a game-changer in a woman’s right to choose, legalizing abortion. From that point forward, any woman who decides to terminate her pregnancy in the first trimester of life can do so without being penalized. The case has continued to be one of much debate between opponents from both sides of the abortion issue. Yet, it has been instrumental and accomplished what it set out to do by giving women the power to decide for themselves what they choose to do with their bodies with regard to an unborn child without incident.
