Most college students have a hard time choosing their Majors and end up making the wrong choices, which they have to stick to. On the other hand, some students are aware of their intellectual strength and weaknesses, and chose Majors which suite them the most. Choosing the right major is the first step by college students towards a successive career. The students who make wrong major choices get stuck with them up until graduation and usually end up with regrets and being resentful. Wrong major choices impact on the entire life of an individual such that even though they manage to obtain good jobs, they will never be contented. This is a paper on wrong major choices among college students, their causes and effects.
My elder brother, who obtained his Bachelor’s degree ten years ago majored in History, and is a good example of a student who made wrong major choices. The effects of a wrong major choice are prevalent in his life up to today. Although he currently holds a great job, he regrets that he didn’t choose his major more wisely. He intimated to me in a conversation that we had the effects of wrong major choices. While in college, he chose History as his major, which he described as the biggest mistake of his life. Back then, he didn’t regard major choices with the gravity that they deserved. It dawned on him, much later on, the mistake he had made and he greatly regretted it. He wished he could go back in time and undo the wrong choice that he made.
According to my brother, choosing a major is the first step to building a brilliant career and future. Therefore, college students have to carefully consider their Major choices or risk ruining their future careers and living with regrets for the rest of their lives. Also, students have to view their Majors as careers in terms of where, what, and for whom they will be working for when they graduate. They have to assess whether they will it be suited o the tasks and environment associated with their choices. Such kind of questions overwhelms the students and might lead to random major choices.
Some college students change their Majors the moment they feel there are better options than the ones they initially chose. Six months ago, I got accepted to Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh to major in Manufacturing Engineering. Unfortunately, I missed the deadline because I spent a lot of time pondering over my Major choice. When I finally made my decision, I contacted the university and requested to change my Major, they emailed me back and said I was too late as I had missed the deadline. I was given the option of applying the following semester. Nevertheless, at that time, I decided to look for another University. I submitted an application to McNeese State University for a Major in Chemical Engineering. At that time, I felt more contented because I had that feeling that I was moving in the right direction having chosen the right Major.
When I finally got accepted, I had doubts about my major choice, which troubled me. Therefore, I did a little research online and found out that I was on the right track. Learning from other people’s mistakes helped me in making the right Major decision by changing to one which suited me the most. In other cases, some students, some of who are my friends, have been forced to change their major choices because they did not meet the minimum requirements for certain Majors. For example, the universities in Saudi Arabia have a foundation year. Students who get lower than required GPAs for certain Majors are forced to change their choices.
A few college students manage to make the right decision and know what best suits them. For example, Moushal Alyeash, a computer science major, had picked his major as early as from high school and had even started reading on the subject. A couple of months ago, he finished his third year majoring in Computer Science. According to him, college students who were sure about their Major perform better than those who frail about major decisions. Another example, Sultan Almisfer, always dreamt of obtaining his Bachelor’s degree from Australia majoring in Business Administration since he was in high school. Now, he is a graduate student in Business Administration at the Queensland University of Technology, Australia.
My other brother made a smart choice by selecting his major right before he joined college. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree three years ago and got a dream job working at the Ministry of Finance in the capital of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh. A few months ago, he got a scholarship to continue studying for his Masters degree. He decided to further his studies in Australia. Likewise, students who choose their majors beforehand tend to be smarter for a couple of reasons. For example, they already know their major and read about it, thus making it even easier in their studies. Also, they tend to have a plan for the future, something that everyone ought to think about.
On the overall, picking the right major is a daunting and life defining task for college students. Choosing the right major in line with personal capabilities and which will satisfy ones ambitions and desires can prove difficult if one is not fully prepared and well informed. However, a few students know what they should major in since high school, so major selection for them is less tasking. Unfortunately, many students opt for a major just because it seemed easy to study and in the end, they feel like they wasted their time by studying it.
