The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant is “transnational Sunni insurgent group operating primarily in western Iraq and eastern Syria. First appearing under the name ISIL in April 2013” (“Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL)”).
Initially, IGIL proclaimed that their aim is the creation of the caliphate, a single international Islamic state based on sharia, in the provinces of Iraq with prevalence of the Sunni population. Later this idea and activity were extended and to Syria. The main visible purpose of IGIL is formation in Iraq and Syria order relying on opponents of the West countries, and cleaning of the region of other religious groups such as Nusayr Shiites, Christians, Shiites, Yazidi.
There are different statements about financing of the organization. According to experts in spite of the fact that IGIL positions itself as the political and religious organization, in practice, it functions as the criminal organization, and the main source of its income is the tribute, smuggling and other types of crimes. In addition, in Iraq and Syria, the organization turned into a source of the income such acts as commission of thefts in banks, kidnapping, and extortion. Also, terrorists receive financial aid from private investors from Gulf States, in particular from Kuwait and Saudi Arabia supporting war with Bashar al-Assad's regime. Today the majority of the group's funding comes from the production and sale of energy. IGIL occupy almost 300 oil wells in Iraq. At its peak, it operated 350 oil wells in Iraq but lost 45 to foreign airstrikes. Terrorists have captured 60% of Syria's total production capacity. Believed that IGIL was responsible for a collapse of the world prices for oil, as fighters sell "black gold" from the taken fields in the Middle East for cheap.
Confrontation with Islamic radicalism is one of the main demands of the international community. At first, IGIL terrorists actively implement the plan of disintegration of Iraq, and secondly, prepare a new stage of escalation of the Syrian conflict and, thirdly, prepare the "export-driven instability" throughout the Middle East. It is obviously that the Middle East is not last aim of terrorists. Experts think that soon IGIL will be acting in the Maghreb region, the Caucasus and Central Asia.Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant.
