Adaptive Equipment Analysis Assignment

1. Adaptive equipment: Raised Toilet Seat
Raised toilet seat is elevated a ring like detachable mostly made of plastic that is placed in a toilet bowl. Raised toilet seat (RTS) are elevated to make them more comfortable and user-friendly through facilitating sitting (Rossi, 2014). The Raised Toilet Seat are comfortable for patients suffering from disability or back-pain since they provide the comfort at both fronts and rear entry when someone is sitting on them and when one is rising. In terms of fixing or mounting them, the toilets are safe and secure they also provide high hygiene since handling them while washing is easy (Francke, 1996).
2. Functional use of Raised Toilet Set
The elevated toilet seat has a number of functional parts that makes it best among another toilet for both normal people and people living body disability. The toilet raised bowl enables the placement of the ring raised seat (Francke, 1996). The seat can be made to be more comfortable by adding a leather cushion. Its seat gives support to an individual body while using it hence no strain to the back. The toilet can also have some special handles fitted so as to enable the person using it to stand with ease (Rossi, 2014). The support system of this type of toilet is also easy to mount, and lastly the toilet has a lid that is used to close it after use.
3. Performance of the Component of the Raised Toilet Seat
In terms of activities that one performs on a daily basis and its instruments, the toilet is used on a daily basis since people will always relieve themselves after eating (Wagner, 2012). Raised toilets seats are the best type of toilets to use since they provide ease while one is either standing up or sitting on them while relieving themselves (Francke, 1996). Therefore raised toilet seats are the most appropriate instrument for daily activities for the sick and disabled due to the convenience it offers.
5. Use of Raised Toilet Seat
The seat is mounted on a raised bowl of a toilet with smooth round edges; it has a snap lock that is used to fix the seat on the toilet bowl (Wagner, 2012). The seats are made in a way that they fit the made porcelain of the toilet; the snap lock is then used to lock the seat and make it firm for sitting (Rossi, 2014). The snap lock is also used while removing, one has to lift the closing lid (front edge) and use the snap lock to remove the lid for cleaning. The ease of placing and removing the seat through the use of snap lock provides an ideal condition for hygiene maintained.
6. Limitation of Raised Toilet Seat
The major limitations of the raised toilet are that the standard ones are not fit for all type of individuals. Short people will tend to have problems while using and the situation is also the same for the tall people (Wagner, 2012). Therefore, there should be a special type of toilet for these special types of people (Francke, 1996). Another issue is when its being shared in an institution with different types of people, hygiene will be an issue since people are different and will use the facility differently. Some will make it dirty and inconvenience its use by others. The toilet is not also comfortable with heavy clients and sometime uncomfortable to use. Lastly sometime evacuating from the raised seat becomes difficult.
7. Adapting the Elevated Toilet Seat
Adapting the device is easy, since it's a seat placed on top of the normal bowl of the standard toilet to make it more user-friendly (Francke, 1996). Individuals interested in using this toilet seat must access its usage and mobility so as to be acquainted with it before starting using it (Rossi, 2014). The next step will be accessing its safety, is it safe for family members or is it safe for the patient to use under all condition without causing problems. And lastly does it offer the hygiene that one necessitates.
8. Raised Toilet Seat and its Contradiction
Installation and usage sometime become difficult since it is a new platform that is being used to enable people to relieve themselves with ease. It is also awkward to install such seats in big institutions since keeping the hygiene will be difficult (Francke, 1996).
9. Cognitive Skills needed for using Raised Toilet Seat
Cognition is the process of acquiring understanding or acquiring knowledge through mental action by either experience, thought or senses. In this case, cognitive skills needed for using raised toilet seat include all skills requiring mental action or process for effective use of the facility. One of the most crucial cognitive skills required in using this facility are the memory skills. The user needs to store information learnt about the use of the facility in his or her long term memory. Logical and reasoning skills are also required in the use of the facility. These skills enable one to logically think and develop a solution on the use of the toilet seat. Attention skills may at times be required since they help the client to remain focused and avoid distractions during the use of the facility.
10. Motor Skills while using Raised Toilet Seats
The toilet seat is mainly used manually where in some; there is a special seat for people with special conditions. Among the most crucial skills needed is the gross motor skill. This is a skill that enables movement and coordination of both arms and legs with the rest of the body. Fine motor skills are not highly utilized since they involve coordination of small movements of muscles. However, they are important in facilitating intelligence growth.
