In this chapter, the author questions whether democracy is worth the trouble and the resources that are needed to cultivate it and whether it brings about any improvements in a country apart from areas related to political freedoms. The author then goes on to argue that democracy is indeed worth all this trouble, and its benefits extend beyond mere political freedoms. It is argued that democracy promotes other political and civil rights in addition to being a value itself. The main argument of the author, however, is that there is no tradeoff between democracy and economic development as argued by many critics. The main reason given by the author for this is that many authoritarian regimes do not fare any better than democratic regimes in the development sector. According to the author, there is consequently no reason why the liberties and rights that are associated with democracy should be sacrificed.
At the same time, however, a transition towards democracy is not accompanied by a guarantee of vast human rights improvement or rapid economic development. Such a transition can, in fact, be accompanied by instability that may prompt more violation of human rights. According to the author, democracy is not always accompanied by a promise of automatic changes and improvements in sectors of life that do not have a narrow connection with political freedoms. Rather, it presents an opportunity for a political framework where societies that are struggling for human rights and development have a higher possibility of expressing and calling out for their demands. Simply put, democracy offers an opportunity for development and upholding of human rights but does not always guarantee success

In this chapter, the author explores the uses of the model and hypothesis section in a literature review. The author argues that the model and hypothesis are very important pieces that are supposed to accompany the literature review.
According to the author, the model and hypothesis is particularly very important when a study consists of a complex argument. The M & H section essentially provides a platform for an author to express what he or she expects to find from a given review or research. The model allows one to isolate the variables used in the study and show the direction of operation of the causality. On the other hand, the hypothesis enables one to indicate the way in which the variables are related
This section comes after the main thesis of the paper. The thesis as the author defines is essentially the answer to the primary research question, and it guides the entire paper as the students will attempt to evaluate whether the available evidence supports their claim or thesis.
Although the model and hypothesis are not always needed and do not have to be included in a literature review, they are nevertheless quite important as shown by the author.
