Cancer is one of the deceases I have always been scared of. If I had been diagnosed with it, I would sincerely have no idea what feelings I to have. Kris’s reaction to her diagnosis was not certain as she was both scared of it and acted frivolous, joking about cancer. Obviously, she was upset and it took a lot of time to take her decease as it was, to admit the fact of having two dozens of incurable tumors. Her parents stayed strong and didn’t show their actual feelings of fear, which was probably the best way to support their daughter. George Dimitry, a doctor in charge of the case, remained quite neutral about the situation. He tried to tell all the truth as it was, not giving a chance to create any sweet false hopes.
The indefatigable eagerness for finding the best treatment for her cancer and everlasting positive attitude towards recovery were the most surprising features of Kris’s story to me. Her self-confidence and will-power deserve much respect. I can hardly believe many people could stay so strong and keep enjoying their lives having the four stage cancer.
Apart from what we have learnt about cancer and its treatment in class, there were some new revelations to me. I believed the only appropriate treatments for cancer were medications and chemotherapy. It was interesting how Kris went through so many alternative medicine methods like gentle healing massage, anger therapy, visualization exercises, dancing therapy, macrobiotic diet, yoga, raw eating, etc. However, the effectiveness of these approaches has not been proven scientifically, the way Kris benefited from them can be seen easily.
My relation to the movie can be expressed with the same fearful feelings concerning the chance of getting cancer. Although, now I know how people actually cope with cancer and this knowledge reduces my despair by far.
I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who is interested in cancer issues. I think it is a great story about the courageous and determined human survival from cancer.
