Success is what all students want. When one joins school at whatever level, the primary aim is for the student to come out of the school having completed successfully the whole process of schooling. Although this is the primary concern to all the students, success sometimes proves to be elusive to some of the students. There are various aspects that can boost the chances of emerging victorious upon completion of schooling. Some of the issues may vary from one student to the other as well as from the level of education to another. However, two fundamental aspects can lead to success of any student at any level of education. These are developing effective reading skills and regularly visit the library.
Reading skills forms a critical requirement for the success of any students. In college, there is a greater need for reading as opposed to lower levels of schooling (Dartmouth, n.d). One need to read lecture notes, assignments, research, assignments, and even tutorials. All these readings involve various aspect or disciplines. Most students find it difficult to read and hence end up failing. The need for effective reading skills comes in handy at this time. Effective reading skill includes reading the right text with the right speed to make sure that one understands the concepts. It also involves ensuring that one reads the right content and for the right purposes. For this reasons, therefore, one ought to learn how to preview the text to access the main ideas presented in the work. Previewing allows the student to identify the right work for the expected results. Previewing involves checking the topic and the author(s), the abstract if available, and the main headings, graphs, and even the topic sentences in the text. One needs also to learn how to skim to find the sections that are relevant. The same case applies with scanning of the documents. Skimming, scanning, and previewing helps one chooses the right material (UNSW, n.d). It is noteworthy that if a learner reads the wrong document or text, such a reading may be regarded as wasted since it may not help the student do his or her work. After establishing what book or document is right, one needs to do an intensive reading. Intensive reading is a detailed and focused study on the relevant topics. Intensive reading enables the learner to grasp the main connects that one requires to either do an assignment or just to understand them. One begins from the start of the text and underlines the main points. The student may also take notes for future reference since it would save a lot of time.
Where does visiting the library come in the success of the students? It is a fact that most of the collections of literary work usually find their way in the library. It is arguable that the advancement in technology has reduced the need for printed material as there are many forms of the same work on the internet. Whereas this is true, the library is set to enhance detailed reading. It is set for not only access to the reading materials, but also has good reading places where one can concentrate one hundred percent. Making visiting the library a habit would inculcate in the student the right reading skills at the right time and venue. One critical issue to note is that reading requires a place with minimal distractions. If the students tend to prefer to read from the rooms or hostels where there could be numerous distractions, the ability to grasp the ideas is highly compromised. Such may eventually lead to the failure of the student. Moreover, the easy access to numerous reading material in the library acts as an impetus for the student to read as opposed to searching online where there are many competing distractions. The concept of the library has changed with the advent of technology. In a traditional setting, visiting the library meant going to specified building for keeping printed work. The trading library also has reading spaces where one can sit and read and leave the books there or even loan them. However, most universities, and college have online library services that provide the same contents as the brick and mortar buildings. Therefore, visiting the library is no longer a cumbersome affair, and each student can access library services at their convenient time that would increase their chances of succeeding in school. However, one must ensure that he reading environment is right.
However, one may argue that effective reading skills and visiting the library may not necessarily be a guarantee to the success of the students. Such an argument is valid if the motivating factor to read or to go the library is not right. One may have all the skills of effective reading and even go the library, but still fail. Such can occur if the student does not plan his or her time well. For examples, most of the student tends to read when they have examination or assignments. Even with the right skills, reading at the last minute may not help the student to pass. A proper reading habit is necessary for the effectiveness of the learners to work. In addition, one may be distracted by other issues that contribute to the failure. For example, stress may affect the student negatively even when they have the correct skills and go the library. One can also argue that the internet has the same content as the library and, therefore, going to the library has not benefits. Such a standing is right since one can access most of the content online from the university library. This is a twist since one visiting the library does not mean necessary going to the brick and mortar building. One can access the library from any place as long as one has the password to the library websites.
