The environments of the jails and prisons in the United States today are often stressful and terrifying for everyone who is living in them. There are many types of people who often end up in these places, at varying levels of mental stability and intelligence. For those who have had problems with issues such as drugs and lack of income, this can also be greater. People who are homeless often suffer from all of the above and because of this, face a high chance of being incarcerated at some point in their lives.
Being homeless can be an extremely difficult situation for some people that many cannot even imagine. They may not get the right amounts of healthy foods that they need, and also live in insanitary environments. Variables such as these can lead to the fading of one’s mental health and stability, if there ever was any. In times and situations such as these, it can be more likely for people to commit acts of crime such as theft and robbery for items they may need. If these people are simply placed in jail or prison when punished, they could be released and commit the same crimes over and over.
When a mentally ill and/or homeless person does something wrong, it would be useful to determine if it should actually be considered a crime. For example, when if a misdemeanor or minor crime is committed, such as trespassing, perhaps they should just receive a warning. If they must go to jail, there is a chance that they could be more mentally ill when they leave prison, as the correctional officers do usually not know how to deal with psychological problems.
Rather than sending these people to prison, it could be valuable to have therapy and counseling programs available to help them deal with problems they may be facing that could lead them to cause problems in the future.
