Good Example Of Essay On Domestic Abuse

Domestic abuse is an ugly reality in communities throughout the world that each of us is affected by. The change to bring an end to this barbaric behavior begins with the family and expands to society. Two speeches, one by Leslie Morgan Steiner and the other by Jackson Katz, are the sources for the background for the following synthesis. In, Why domestic violence victims don't leave, filmed in the TED Talks, by Leslie Morgan argues that we should speak up against abuser and take a front step to stop them. Violence against women-it’s a man’s, the TED Talks by Jackson Katz, argues that the issue of domestic violence is the responsibility of men before women.
Leslie Morgan’s argument in the video on, Why domestic violence victims don’t leave, states that, “domestic violence happens to everyone”(2:08). She informs the audience than anyone can become the victim of abuse by people we know who are close to us, but who do not care about us. Moreover, “women ages 16 to 24 are three times more likely to be domestic violence victims as women of other age, and over 500 women and girls this age are killed every year”(2:48). These numbers indicate that the problem is large and something must be done to help those in abusive relationships to prevent further harm. Her solution to help bring an end to this problem is through ending the silence. Remaining bystanders in the lives of an abuse victim is only helping perpetuate the problem.
In, Violence against women-it’s a man’s Issue, Jackson Katz, who puts the responsibility in the hands of men as the catalyst to end domestic violence and abuse. With much vigor he presented his topic, asking “why do so many men abuse, physically, emotionally, verbally, and other ways”(5:05). It is a critical question that must be asked, and according to Katz, powerful and prominent men must stand up and against this sexist and anti-female behavior to put a final end to it.
Domestic violence is not a dilemma that people can sit back and criticize or just discuss; it is a problem that requires a solid solution. The speaker from each of the TED Talks videos both share a common concern of the responsibility to end the issue belongs to more than just the female members of society who are the victims of the abuse, but so many others too. However, Morgan’s talk focuses primarily on the women who are abused coming forward and speaking up about what they are going through to help save themselves from this scary relationship. Katz’s angle on the discussion aims to make men understand that it is the way that they think and behave toward women that needs to end in order for this exploitation through domestic abuse to continue at the hands of the men who are perpetrators. One speaker is directing the message toward the victims, while the other speaker is telling all men to take a stand against abuse. The idea of both speakers and the speeches they gave makes me think that a re-education of all individuals is necessary for every member or society to understand the each person is responsible in taking actions that bring an end to domestic abuse and violence for the women, children, and even men throughout the world.
