The dramatic rise in unprotected sex amongst women of child-bearing age demands the significant use of Emergency Contraceptive Pills (ECP). The newly discovered forms of emergency contraceptive methods safeguard women from unwanted pregnancy. It eradicates any psychological or other health hazards. In Tussel et al. “The role of emergency contraception”, ECPs offer reassurance to the 7.9 million women that uses condom as their sole method of contraception. ECPs can be effectively used in cases of condom slippage or breakage. There are varied forms of contraception available in the US that includes combined oral contraceptive tablets, levonorgestrel-only contraceptive tablets, and the copper-T intrauterine device (IUD). ECP is the most popular form of emergency contraception. It reduces the risk of unwanted pregnancy by almost 75 percent. Statistics show that approximately 210 million women worldwide become pregnant each year. Amongst them, 80 million are cases of unwanted pregnancies, which kill 530,000 women annually. ECPs advances women’s rights and caters to a woman’s health requirements. It is supported by WHO (Centre for Reproductive Rights). In Gupta and Goldman’s “Emergency contraceptive options available for adolescents”, teen pregnancies can be best avoided by ECPs; thus, protecting a woman’s health and decision making processes. Even women who are breastfeeding can use ECPs without any concern about adverse side effects (British Pregnancy Advisory Service).
However, ECPs have received criticisms from orthodox societies that claimed this method to be similar to abortion and do not help against sexually transmitted diseases. A common perception in the Asian countries is that ECPs instigate women to indulge in pre-marital sex.
After a brief research about the pros and cons of ECPs, it can be concluded that it is a mandatory item and should be in the house of every woman of child-bearing age.
