Good Example Of Essay On Engineering: Pressure Ulcer Prevention
Summary of the talk:
The speaker begun by informing the audience that a cluster of pressure- ulcer cases in the month of November had triggered thorough investigations by the on-site monitoring body of the Alvarez and Marsal healthcare. State regulators were also involved in the investigation. An official task force was created to curb the fatal preventable skin injuries. Pressure ulcers need to be controlled.
The speaker informed that a pressure ulcer has four progressive stages of development. Each stage is always more serious than the previous. The main cause of a pressure ulcer is failing to relieve pressure on the ulcer. This can happen to patients who are bed bound and are unable to relieve pressure by changing their sleeping positions. Pressure ulcers are a serious problem because 11-23% of patients admitted in nursing homes and hospitals develop pressure ulcers. One out of every twenty five pressure ulcer admissions resulted into death. Pressure ulcers are a serious problem for they develop quickly and are not easy to heal. One cost pressure ulcer can cost around 40,000 USD to heal. They are therefore a serious problem. Shortage of nurses and the fact that some of the patients need a lot of frequent turning are some of the challenges that are facing the process of healing pressure ulcers. To deal with the ulcers we should identify regions of the skin where they are likely to form, develop a resource-optimized repositioning schedule for patients and acquire a historical schedule for patient positions. To solve the problem, the patient should be moved and rested frequently. Daily reports that are available to the nurses and the physicians should be availed each day.
