I strongly disagree with my colleague regarding the ban of airing funeral processions of a martyr. However, he has raised a very solid point on relating with the plight of the grieving mother and family.
Freedom of Information may be present and utilized by the public, but it does not mean that we start showing every single thing going on around us. The viewership of the television ranges from children of four to adults of sixty and above. We have to keep in mind the future of the coming generation and not show every second horrible act happening in the world. This may traumatize the children.
On the subject of airing and publishing pictures of martyr’s funeral, I believe that they are necessary to show when the need is there. For instance, the funeral proceedings of a soldier who has been given a lot of coverage on the news can be shown on television for increasing the courage of the soldiers and the nation, as has been done in pre-war scenarios.

I have to disagree with my colleague. I think that the ban on pictures of military personnel was essential for operational as well as personal reasons. If pictures were allowed to be taken on the Air Base, the public would have tried to act as experts on aerial warfare and defense in such a manner that a wide number of TV interviews and article from laymen would have ended up in the spotlight. The news channels would have capitalized on this innate ability of mankind to criticize what others are doing. It would have undermined the military.
Secondly, my esteemed colleague says that the ban should not have been made and as “For the families, the media should leave them in peace”. The media would have done the exact thing and vast amount of resources would have been spent on the protecting of the families, or they would have been hung out to dry. Hence I believe that the ban was required to keep the information privy to the select intellectual few.
