Evidence-based design in health care facilities is meant to propel better and quality care towards patients (Onken, 2012). One of the principles associated with such design is ensuring that communication with patients is not hindered in any manner. Communication is a significant factor in caregiving that is often impeded by the way the rooms are arranged in a health care facility. Sometimes, the layout of the healthcare facilities lacks adequate space and, therefore, promotes crowding. The crowding is an inhibiting factor to teamwork and communication between health practitioners and their patients. Evidence-based design seeks to reduce the occurrence of such incidents substantially.
Likewise, a principle of the design is certifying that there is the reduction in medical errors. For instance, the Institute of Medicine in the USA estimated that 98,000 patients were victims of medical errors in 2008 (Becker & Parsons, 2003). Some of those errors were lethal. Evidence-based design strives to reduce such cases through the layout of healthcare facilities. It all amounts to the manner in which the rooms are arranged, how the nursing units are stationed, and the easiest way in which patients can be monitored. Evidence-based design is also supposed to reduce the number of accidents that often occur in healthcare facilities. The accidents could be a result of the floor layout among other things. It is common knowledge that hospitals can be the most dangerous places. Evidence-based design strives to ensure that the healthcare environment is safe. One other principle that is associated with the design is ensuring that a health care facility survives for a long time. Such can be achieved through the design that fundamentally helps in the preservation of nursing staff and satisfaction of the patients.
Among the many principles, reduction of medical errors could be the most important one. The reason is that it can be very costly to a hospital, and it is something that needs taming. Medical errors are dangerous and can taint the reputation of a healthcare facility. They are also dangerous to the lives of patients.
