Supervision skills
Supervision is the act of managing a group of employees through leadership and influence (Sharp, par.1). To effectively manage employees, one must have communication, motivational and leadership skills. To communicate effectively, a supervisor should be able to listen keenly, speak and write in a clear manner that is acceptable to all. He must regularly communicate, accurately and honestly no matter the means of communication he chooses to use (Sharp, par.7). A supervisor must learn how to motivate his employees when they do the right thing by recognizing their efforts and also by rewarding them whenever necessary (Reinsilber, par.21). Good supervisors show their leadership skills by making decisions especially in complicated and tense situations (Reinsilber, par.26). At Exxon, the employee performance has moderately improved from the result of the last performance conducted. The employees’ communication skills with superiors and peers have developed as well as their attitude towards work and attendance. The quality of work produced is better than ever before with employees showing capability to work on their own and in a group setting. Eighty per cent of the employees seem to have goal-oriented ambition towards the enhancement of their careers, as well as the company’s improvement. However, the company should invest in a psychological counselor to help in managing stress at work especially when tensions are high. It might improve the quality of work and productivity by a significant margin. Legislation The work Act of 2005 provides legislation and essential provisions for improving and securing the safety, health, welfare and relations at work (Hsa.ie, par.1). The employer is obliged to creating and maintaining a safe and healthy environment at work. The employer is required to prepare a written health and safety declaration named as a Safety Statement. The employer is supposed to give out information, instructions, training and supervision on security and health of employees while maintaining welfare facilities for employees at works place. In addition, prevent risks to all personnel working or visiting the workplace and have a plan in case of emergency (Hsa.ie, par.2). Employees are supposed to participate in safety and health training and comply with rules and regulations provided by the employer. Similarly, they should report any dangerous situations at work employ proper conduct at work and never to get intoxicated while at work (Hsa.ie, par.3). Summary Evaluating and ranking of employee in a company or organization is a challenging task. There are various factors to be considered by the employer before the work is complete. However, there is no doubt that an employee experiences a feeling of anticipation right before their appraisal. Assessments are meant to evaluate an employee’s productivity to the company and how well they are developing in their profession and achievements gained. The evaluation focuses on how the employee perceives his/her role in the organization; it takes a look at the employee’s ethics towards work and his peers and also his superiors. The appraisal will provide an evaluation into how well an employee exhibits ethical behavior. It will take a look at the employee’s goals towards their future in the company and their ability to carry out their tasks within the timeframe given to them. The employee's objectives will be evaluated, and this provides the opportunity to assess how many of their goals have been achieved since they started working. The evaluation analyzes how well the employee communicates with everyone at work including his peers, senior staff, and employers. The employees might have a difficult time clearly assessing themselves, but honesty is highly expected of them.
