Good Example Of Essay On Global Positioning System (GPS)

Global Positioning System (GPS) is the navigation system in which a satellite is based on the space. It provides information on time and location. The information is supplied in all weather conditions. The GPS consists of a system of 24 satellites that were set into orbit by the US Department of Defense.
There are different advantages and disadvantages that are associated with the GPS. The advantages in most cases seem to compete the disadvantages out. First, the GPS is tremendously easier to navigate. This is because it tells you the direction for the turns people take or have to take before they get to the required directions. Such like applications are therefore not hard to use (Rao, 328).
Second, the GPS works in all weather conditions. There is thus reduced or no worries when it comes to climate and other weather related conditions. It works better even in weather sensitive devices. It also costs less when compared to other navigation systems. It only requires a few data costs that are associated with internet providers (Rao, 329).
Third, it is the most accurate navigation system thus giving accurate or precise values and locations. It is because the US government constantly updates it. It thus improves the belief people have in it in terms of quality and precision (Rao, 329).
On the contrary, there are cons that are associated with the GPS navigation system. First; when using GPS navigation system on battery operated devices, the battery may fail and hence requiring replacement or an external power supply. This may waste time or create unnecessary inconvenience (McNamara, 328).
Second; buildings, trees and sometimes extreme weather conditions may distort the signals from the GPS satellites. The distortion may lead to giving faulty directions and predictions. This may result in the problem or an inconvenience (McNamara, 328).
Third; there may be GPS failure sometimes that leads to carrying of backup maps. The maps are tedious in carrying and hard to locate directions manually. It, therefore, wastes time and sometimes wrong interpretation of the maps may be lead to problems such as leading one to dangerous zones among others (McNamara, 328).
The GPS affects society in various ways. First, it is applied in locating people especially children using companies like uLocate Communications. Additionally, it assists in keeping track of the elderly people especially in cases where they might wander off alone (Vermaat, 450).
Furthermore, the GPS assists in planning for road trips, hikes, adventures for landmarks, diners, and other things. It furthermore helps in getting emergency roadside assistance in case one’s vehicle fails in the middle of their journey (Vermaat, 452).
It also helps in tracking people’s property such as car, pets, finding family and friends among other important things. The GPS has proven to be of great help to the society especially with its recent integration into cellular phones (Vermaat, 453).
In conclusion, the advent of the GPS brought a revolution in terms of navigation. It has more pros than cons thus being more helpful to the society. Its uses in the society have made life cheaper thus becoming a navigation system that is loved by many.
