An instance in which I was asked for help involved my neighbor and I. They had never asked me for anything before. To my knowledge, they had never asked anybody for help with anything before. Because of this, it made me confused as to why they would ask for help now. I understood, however, after the task was explained, that my neighbor had no choice but to ask for help. They needed several large jugs of water moved from inside their garage to outside in order to park their car to keep it from being worn by the weather that was threatening the area.
My neighbor begrudgingly asked for my help. I could tell they did not want it and were very prideful. Looking back, I imagine it was difficult to admit to themselves they were unable to perform tasks around the house that needed to be done by themselves. However, they did not stand in my way or interfere with the process. In fact, though they were not the most pleasant of company, they provided precise direct on where to move the jugs, as well as which jugs were to be moved. The direction was helpful and seemed to make my neighbor feel a part of the process, which, in the end, made them act friendlier about the entire experience. I was doubtful about how it would go at first, but ultimately helping them was not bad at all.
A circumstance in which I required help demanded I ask a friend of mine to help me with homework. At this time, I was struggling with math. There was question as to whether I would pass or not. I did not want a tutor; I thought being taught by somebody I knew would be easier. I had mixed feelings about asking though because my friend made math look very easy. In a way, I felt jealous of their abilities. It made it difficult for me to ask, and difficult for me to concentrate while they were teaching me. The fact that they had agreed so eagerly to help me made me angry. I knew I was acting like a child, but I had grown tired of not understanding the equations, as well as worrying about whether I was going to pass the class.
My friend took my bad attitude in stride. They had had trouble with science. Having been forced to ask for help, they had reacted in the same way and understood where I was coming from. Rather than acting superior in their abilities, they simply related the material to me in a way I could understand. We were still friends, but they were also teaching me. They made no mention of my bad attitude when it came out, which I was thankful for because it was difficult to control at times; I was very frustrated. There calm demeanor helped though, because I was able to see they were not holding their comprehension of the material over my head, but simply trying to share it.
Comparing the two circumstances, it is plainly obvious being asked for help is easier. It does not require the individual to set aside their pride. Instead, it only requires a simply, “yes,” and a block of spare time. I felt frustrated and almost ashamed when I had to ask for help. The feeling is in stark contrast to feeling happy and capable when approached for help by my neighbor. One may be willing to extend a helping hand but slow to ask for it. Independence makes the emotions connected to asking for help problematic.
