I agree with the main point of the article. At some point in everyone’s life, there will be opportunities or circumstances that will drive out the leadership qualities and abilities of a person, whether in a simple or complex situation and regardless if they are aware of it or not.

There may be uneasiness or even some amount of awkwardness at the start, especially if I was used to the mindset that I am only a follower and not a leader. However, I can adjust this mindset and become more comfortable with the idea since my leadership will contribute to some amount of goodness to these people or even to society in general.

My peers in school and some members of my family see me as a leader. They consider certain qualities in me that are appropriate for a leader and this is why, in most cases, they prefer to ask me to head a team or organization in school or manage some of our family affairs at home. Being responsible, outspoken and taking initiative are some of my leadership qualities.

I see myself more as a leader but I can be effective in both. During my earlier years, especially when I was still a child, I was trained to be a good follower. But growing up, I have been exposed to a lot of situations where my leadership qualities emerged. As they say, you cannot be a good leader if you are not a good follower so I try to be effective in both roles.

Knowing that I am a leader is a gift and I will embrace it. I will do my best to hone further my leadership skills through attending trainings and leadership seminars. Of my circle of friends, I serve as their leader. Considering most of my friends are shy, they would usually request me to act as the leader when the need arises. They have also acknowledged my leadership qualities especially since they have seen me in situations where I handled my leadership role well.

As a leader, I will encourage my members to participate and to contribute to the goals of the team. I will assign a task to each of them where they will be able to contribute their individual talent and skills that will add to the over-all success of the team. It is also my role to motivate, inspire and guide each member to work towards the accomplishment of the team’s goal.

In my opinion, the democratic or participative type of leadership is the most effective. In this type of leadership, the leader does not dictate but gets first the opinion of his members before coming up with a decision. He encourages his members to have a voice but, ultimately, will have the last say.

The autocratic or authoritarian leadership style, for me, is the least effective because here, the members do not have any voice or freedom to discuss with the leader before a decision is made. An autocratic leader is also controlling which will not work anymore with the new generation.

I prefer leaders who are democratic and participative. I like sharing inputs that will contribute to the betterment of the organization. Given this, a leader who hears and values my opinions will very much gain my respect and cooperation.
