The Climate change is a primary concern today. There is an increase in the evidence of climate change, such as global warming, heat waves, desertification, increased drought and snowfall, the sea level rising, among others. There has also been a lot of debate on the methods and ways of conserving the environment. However, these actions seem to do little than anticipated. Can humans make any significant progress in the environmental conservations to stop claimed change?
The WorldWatch Institute claims that the UN projects that the world population shall be 10.5 billion in 2050. If the current populations of about 7 billion are not getting enough food to feed itself, what more damage would three more billion people demand? It is evident that there shall be little to call conservation in so far as the world population increases at this high rate. Further, one must also question the amount of built-up areas that over10 billion people shall have to occupy. The cities shall burst their boundaries and expand the neighborhood agricultural lands forcing farmers to move further in the native forest to provide food.
On the same note, the current trends in the emission of carbon dioxide are steadily increasing majorly due to the actions of man. For the industries to supply goods and services to over 10.5 billion people, more greenhouse gases shall be released into the environment. Moreover, the rice fields also produce methane gas as well as farm animal all of which contribute to the increasing temperatures. Although there is an emphasis on clean energy today, there is no guarantee that all the populations shall access the green energy to the extent of reducing the productions of greenhouse gases. The number of cars shall also increase the emission of greenhouse gases.
Are the laws strong enough or is there a possibility of stronger laws in the near future? The aspects of climate change cut across almost all the economic activities of human beings. The laws set either internationally or locally do not address some of the causes of climate change. For examples, the vehicle emission may not have strong laws prohibiting faulty vehicles from the roads. In the developing countries, there is a high demand for second-hand cars. Moving old cars from Japan to East Africa does not stop if from emitting vast amounts of greenhouse gas.
The large cooperate uses social cooperate responsibility to mask the negative aspects they of the environment. The policy makers who believe in capitalist ideologies find it difficult to regulate the fundamental aspects of climate. For example, it is unethical or even illegal to force one to plant trees in his land especially if such a person uses the land to plant crops for survival. Capitalism encourages scramble for the available resources for personal gains. The effects of ones actions to the environment after acquiring wealth come second. Can the world change the economic approach from capitalism to socialism? Such a change is not foreseeable. From the propositions above, it is clear that there is little hope that there shall be any significant progress towards stopping climate change.
