Use of Marijuana versus Daytime Sleepiness among Youth
Use of Marijuana versus Daytime Sleepiness among Youth
Researchers suggest that the rampant use of marijuana among the youth in the United States could be the cause of sleepiness among many youths during the day. The researchers include Dr. Mark Splaingard, who is a director of the center for sleep disorders in a health facility in Columbia. The beginning of narcolepsy is evident in childhood, but the doctors propose that the use of marijuana could also increase the chances of severe narcolepsy. In this case, the individual tends to fall asleep during the day in spite of having adequate sleep at night. In addition to the sleep, other sign of narcolepsy include muscle weakness, sleep paralysis, and hallucinations("Marijuana use could explain excessive daytime sleepiness in some teens - Medical News Today," n.d., 2015). Narcolepsy is extreme sleep that may strike the victim at any time of the day and affect his or her daily schedule. The doctors found samples of marijuana in the urinalysis conducted on teenagers who showed symptoms that were consistent with narcolepsy.
The importance of his health issue is the prevalence of narcolepsy in the future given that the use of marijuana is legal in a majority of states within the country. As much as it may not be an alarming condition, narcolepsy may affect the performance of the teenagers in other areas especially their education. Weakness of the muscles implies that they may not be able to accomplish some tasks that are demanding physically. Moreover, the teenagers may not participate in other co-curricular activities such as sports, which may be good for their health. Therefore, the issue is important in the sense that it can regulate the amount of marijuana circulating the market to mitigate the adverse effects that may accrue to the teenagers.
