It was almost time. I had packed my duffel bag, and was as prepared as one can be in these situations. I needed to go downstairs and say my goodbyes. I had barely been out of Foley, Alabama in my entire life, but now I was going to Afghanistan. It was worlds away from anything I had ever experiences.
My girlfriend since high school, Emma, was waiting for me downstairs, along with my parents and grandparent. Except Papa Johnson. He had passed away when I was still a boy. It was his memory that motivated my choice to join the military. At 20 I had not accomplished much in life, and I always knew he expected big things from me. He had fought in the Korean War. He was a hero in my eyes, and I wanted to follow in his footsteps.
I looked at myself in the mirror. My plain black shirt set off the tan I had from going to the beach last weekend. I knew it might be the last time I went to the beach for a while. Maybe ever. I was not promised to come back alive after all. I realized I had begun to rub the cross I wore around my neck. It had been a gift from Emma. Perhaps I was subconsciously reaching out to Jesus in the hope I would come back in one piece.
Even with all my things packed, it felt like something was missing. It was at this time, while I was in my private musings soaking in the last moments of being in my own bedroom, that I heard a knock at the door. “Come in”, I said. It was my MiMi Johnson. With tears in her eyes, she told me, “I want you to have something of your Papa’s. This is the New Testament he carried while in Korea. He wrote notes in it while he was there. I want you to carry it while you are in Afghanistan. He would have wanted you to have itand he would have been so proud of you and the man you have become.”
Suddenly I knew I had everything I needed to take with me. It was time to leave my childhood room behind and go say goodbye to those I love.
