The Jewish Big Brother Big Sister Association
Every organization are confronted with challenges that is designed to improve and develop its existing practices. While these challenges may sprang from different areas and aspects of business operations there is the urgent need to address each issue as they arise to prevent it from further escalating to an alarming level. For this paper, the Jewish Big Brother Big Sister Association is being considered. The author of this paper would seek to identify two challenges that confronts the organization which could significantly improve the productivity and efficiency of the organization—moral and emotional burnout. For the purpose of finding a solution to these problems this paper will integrate extensive research in the field of health and wellness to address the identified challenges that confronts the members of the organization utilizing important researches initiated by no less than the Global Health Media Project. Series of recommendations shall be provided along with justifications for every recommendation raised to address the issue that confronts the workers of the Jewish Big Brother Big Sister Association.
The Jewish Big Brother Big Sister Association
Designed to build a critical network of support, the Jewish Big Brother Big Sister Association, helps raise funds to allow them to carefully match children with a caring adult mentors . In addition, the organization if also designed to utilize their mechanism in providing ongoing funding for the children under their process.
Challenges: Moral and Emotional Burnout
Considering the demands of the responsibilities assigned to the Brothers and Sisters assigned to work with the children in the organization, it has become evident that among them has been observed to suffer moral and emotional burnout. This is on top of the physical exhaustion that is typical in any profession regardless of its nature.
Discussion
According to the Global Health Media Project, the demands of the health care and social welfare profession is high. In lieu with this, they understand that volunteers, workers and staffs of such organizations would naturally experience burnouts. However, this is not only limited to physical exhaustion. In fact, a large number of social and health workers who have grown attach to their patients and their client-based community will also experience moral and emotional burnouts. In one of the institution’s project Associate Professor Bill Young said,
“the experience gave (you) me a good eye for what people need and what will work. Starting the IVs on infants had me on the edge of my seat and wanting to help.” .
The intense feeling that the Brothers and Sisters experience in relation to their responsibilities make them vulnerable to moral and emotional burnout. Burnout is a psychological condition involving exhaustion experienced by an individual over a long period of time. A study revealed that burnout is a result of different factors, among which involved dispositional factors as related to having to play a very critical role .
Recommendation
A study initiated by Alarcon, Eschleman and Bowling in 2009 suggests that one solution to burnout is keeping workers within a realizable goal and expectations . By keeping everything real, workers will not feel that they are unable to perform their task. In addition, a sense of accomplishment will also boost the morale of workers.
Similarly, Swinder and Zimmerman (2010) noted that workers who keep track of their accomplishments and their progress will give them a sense of direction. By having a journal that documents all these progress the workers will see the need for advancement. Having a visual evidence that will constantly remind them of what has been done and what is left to be done will energize them.
Finally, there is the need for group dynamics where each member of the organization can learn from the experiences of their co-workers and those who are senior to them. They can get inspiration, techniques and motivations from those who have advanced to their roles .
