As I started research into the world of birds, in particular African Grey parrots, it was a huge surprise how much information is available. Collecting the information was not a problem. Selecting interesting facts African Grey parrots and thinking of weaving them into a story was the main challenge.
Initially, I considered portraying Brandy as a mean owner who gave Gean all kinds of tasks to perform to test its ability and intelligence. I also considered that Gean never got any rewards of snacks for doing a good job. The primary reason for such a consideration was that I wanted to highlight the abuses showered on pets by owners. A story line depicting, how bad the parrot felt and how deep the hurt, would be an excellent back drop to my story. However, I had to give up building a story line like that since it would overshadow the achievements of Gean picking plastic letters and responding very well to the questions as although it were a human being.
It was not that difficult to think of Gean having love for snacks, expecting a reward whenever it answers the question in a very appropriate manner, and expressing displeasure when its emotional feelings are hurt. However, it took me a while to figure Gean picking her feathers to show displeasure.
Saying that ‘Gean requested a bottle of gentle spray for her feathers in a humble tone’ came along as I was reading more and more about the intellectual capabilities of African Grey Parrots. Then I made Brandy describe the bird as intelligent just like humans. When I compared the feelings of African Grey Parrot to that of human child having two years of age and at the same its intellectual capability to that of a five year old human being, came along due to my prior writing experiences of making comparisons. I learned that comparative accounts are an excellent way of telling a story.
My research also found that caring for birds requires a lot of time and can be as difficult as raising a new born human being. When it came to depicting how conscious the birds are about surroundings and unable to easily interact with new personalities, I had the opportunity to introduce a mean character in the form of Brandy’s neighbor. However, I soon turned the neighbor also interacting well with Gean as they got familiar to each other. I must confess that my writing on the quality of biting and its dependence on the level of interactivity were described in the research reports and are not my original thinking.
When it came to describing health and sanitary needs of birds, I very much went along with the facts found in my research since I did not want to take liberties with them in my story line. For example, I stressed that when Gean resorts to picking her feathers hard, there may be a serious need for a veterinary attention.
In describing the food habits, I made a subtle distinction between Gean as pet loving regular snacks, cereal and fruits and a wild parrot mainly feeding on fruits, nuts and vegetables as meals. In addition, I pointed out the importance of nutritional values and Gean not feeding on enough seeds.
My research also suggested that keen cleanness should be observed in the cage by removing remains of such diet so as to avoid rotting and breeding of bacteria in the cage. I emphasized that Brandy keeps Gean’s cage immaculate and provides hygienic water given on a daily basis by use of sipper bottle placed outside the cage to prevent the birds from tripping it’s drink with droppings. I made Gean;s sipper bottle into bright green in color because I happen to love that color.
In summary, I find that doing a thorough research into a topic is key to writing an excellent article. Having all the facts about a topic and careful evaluation of the order of presentation are absolutely required to make the report interesting and readable. My recent experiences with researching a topic and weaving the facts into a story are rewarding and educational.
