Ethos, Pathos, and Logos
The PowerPoint document starts by describing three rhetorical strategies: Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. According to this document, Rhetoric is the art of using language to persuade others. Ethos is a method for speakers or authors to persuade the listener or reader that they are trustworthy and what they say is true. The document then gives three example of advertisements one of which is inviting the reader to purchase its products online and the other is persuading the reader that its service is convenient. The document then goes on explaining what logos is; (appeal based on logic or reason.) and explains that legal documents are one of the examples of logos. Then we have some examples from scientific articles that use logos. Then it describes pathos as “appeal based on emotion” which is using human appeal to connect to audience in order to draw a response. In the example, the text uses pity feeling to persuade the reader that Acme is dangerous to the environment.
It is very interesting to learn about these techniques. Writers can achieve their objectives much easier using these rhetoric’s, and it also helps them have more interesting texts. Using these techniques, I will be able to write more persuasive articles but I should be aware not to overuse or misuse them (like some exaggerating ads) as they can cause the reader to lose their trust in the text.
Both approaches (the PowerPoint document and the video) are interesting and informative. In the video, four characters including a piece activist, a writer, and a humorist, talk about their understanding of their rhetorical expressions. The video is easier to follow but the PowerPoint document explains more and is more informative. It uses real examples to reinforce what it is talking about which is very helpful. The language is more educational and similar to textbooks, which are appropriate mediums for teaching. Overall, I prefer the PowerPoint document to inform me of the subject.
