The scene that was chosen to be discussed in this paper was the one where Hamlet, the protagonist in Shakespeare’s tragedy, and the then current prince of the kingdom of Denmark, killed Polonius. The first point suggests that what made the impact of this scene on the development and success of the entire play so big is the fact that it set the stage for Hamlet’s future actions
This scene occurred in Act III, particularly in Scene IV. This, essentially, is one of the parts of the story that had the greatest impact on the way how the entire story of Shakespeare’s work transpired. Before Hamlet actually killed Polonius, he was thinking about how he would exact revenge for the apparent disgrace of his father, the late King Hamlet, when his mother decided to marry his stepfather, Claudius.
It is also important to note that this is essentially one of the major reasons why Hamlet’s character in the story had been exhibiting aggressive, bizarre, and even threatening behaviors. In order to strengthen the argument in this paper, it would be important to describe what happened in that scene. Gertrude, Hamlet’s mom and the queen, was about to confront Hamlet in her chamber. This was made possible because Gertrude called for Hamlet to come in her chamber so that they could talk.
What Hamlet did not know, however, was that Polonius, the chief counselor of the king was there, talking to her mom, prior to his arrival. And when he arrived, Polonius, did not actually leave, but instead hid behind a decoration made of hand-woven fabric located in one area of Gertrude’s chamber. Now, the rather heated up argument started between Gertrude and Hamlet. Hamlet accosted Gertrude almost violently, citing that he had to do that so she could be fully aware of the extent of her sin. Naturally, Gertrude got frightened and started freaking out. Polonius, who was also in the room, started to reveal his presence and of course, to call for help.
This shocked Hamlet. He even said “How now, A rat, Dead, for a ducat, dead” . It can be said that based on Hamlet’s reaction, he thought that it was his stepfather, Claudius. He got really mad for he thought the people surrounding him were conspiring against him and so in that moment, he quickly drew his sword and stabbed it through the tapestry. Polonius, who was still unseen at that time, got killed. Gertrude, still afraid of what had transpired between her and Hamlet during the start of the scene, got even more terrified. She asked her son “O me, what hast thou done” . And Hamlet responded saying “Nay, I know not: is it the king” .
This leads to the second point which suggests that Hamlet is a man who was really eager to exact revenge. Notably, Hamlet just swung his sword, with the intent of killing whoever would be hit by it, even though he did not know who the person behind the tapestry was. This is one of the turning points in the story, and one that dictates the remaining parts of the tragedy because it was in this scene where Hamlet’s personality was revealed.
And thirdly, what makes this scene so significant in the story is the impact it made. It represented a point of no return for Hamlet for her already confronted the queen with violence and made himself a killer by stabbing Polonius, the King’s chief counselor. At that point, there was no going for Hamlet. Also, at that point, after discovering that it was not the King that he slayed but the relatively innocent Polonius, Hamlet revealed to his mom how he was planning to exact revenge by showing a picture of the two kings, the past and the present..
