Body

Euthanasia also known as assisted suicide is giving patients the right to choose whether they want to live or die. This procedure is administered on patients on life support machines and those with terminal illnesses and there is no hope for recovery and those undergoing much stress and pain. The topic of euthanasia is significant in health care because, this procedure is done by health care professionals. In addition, it is significant to healthcare because of the practical arguments for and against euthanasia.

Nurses are obliged to respect human life and this is very important for the nursing profession.

According to the medical ethics, nurses are obligated to respect human life and at times they are said to violate this code of ethics if they practice euthanasia. Therefore, this procedure has become controversial in health care and a lot needs to be done in order to clear this controversy and make it legal because according to Banovic and Turanjanin, it is considered as murder (2014). The authors give reasons why it is considered as murder by the doctors. In addition, nurses should participate in the euthanasia debates in order to help come out with proper reasons why it should be administered (Maher, 2014).

Nurses can fail to take good care of the terminally ill because there is an option.

Nurses and other health care professionals have the mandate to give a patient on a life support machine or with extreme pain a chance to opt for euthanasia. There are patients who suffer from extreme pain and misery, yet there is no chance for their recovery. Therefore, to relieve these patients from the pain, the nurses can give them or their families the euthanasia option. For instance, patients suffering from terminal cancer can suffer from extreme pain and this brings misery to both the patients and their family members. According to Levy et al, in such cases, it is more humane and practical for the nurse and other health professionals to grant the patient a wish to end his/her life in a painless way, other than suffering from the pain (2013). Doctors should take the prominent role to grant patients a choice to choose either to live or die.

The vulnerable people can be pressured to choose euthanasia because the doctors and nurses have been given the mandate.

Even though very patient can decide what happens to his or her life and how he/she wants to end his life when in pain, the situation should be analyzed carefully. Most doctors can lure their patients into euthanasia because they are tired of them or just because some of them have been abandoned by their family members due to financial and emotional encumbers. Patients with terminal illnesses places their families in a financial encumber yet some of them do not survive in the end; therefore, nurses can grant such patients the euthanasia procedure.

Conclusion

Euthanasia gives a patient a right to chooses whether to live or die in the cases of extreme pain and terminal diseases with no chances of survival. The topic is important in health care because of the practical arguments in the medical field about euthanasia. Nursed are obligated to respect the value of human life and when they practice euthanasia, it is said to violate their medical ethics. It is argued that, this procedure puts the vulnerable population at risk in the hands of the doctors. In addition, with euthanasia available as a choice, nurses might fail to take good care of the terminally ill and lure them into opting for euthanasia.
