Good Example Of Health And Medicine Essay
Proposals for HIV Awareness and Prevention
Introduction There is a disproportionately high number of AIDS cases among the African Americans, and the sub-populations that exist within the African-American community are at even higher risk, especially sex workers and drug users. The proposal is on extending help and information to hard-to-reach groups within the African American community and provide comprehensive, high-quality medical treatment as well as impart education on AIDS. The objective behind is to reduce HIV and STD incidence and increase knowledge among sex workers, on HIV-prevention techniques.
Discussion
There is an immediate need to educate individuals in the neighborhoods regarding HIV prevention. Teams can be built who can provide short and intensive education messages on the streets related to HIV and STD. These sessions can place in rented rooms or areas close to high drug use and sex activity. Free STD and HIV testing will be provided for the participants. The aim would be to raise awareness among IDUs and sex workers about their health status and what precautions to take. They need to be educated on the use of safer needle practices and sex techniques. Medical treatment should be ensured for those who test positive for HIV and STD. The group will be divided into teams to carry out administrative and fiscal responsibility, and staffed accordingly.
The issues of the African-American population and the highest risk groups need to be evaluated. The target population often tends to distrust social and medical institutions, and therefore it is essential to building a level of trust first. Street outreach and small group workshops can help spread education on HIV/AIDS Education. Mobile testing in neighborhoods and discussions on AIDS and STDs can help break the barriers and taboos, as well as win the trust of the community. Peer directed groups could offer emotional support for individuals living with HIV, their families, and social networks. As these groups will be smaller, it will encourage better support and communications Data will be collected by outreach workers on the pre- and post-tests of HIV/STD and an in-depth questionnaire about risk behaviors will get the answers.
The staff will participate in regular meetings to review the activities performed the previous week. They will also get training to carry out their activities responsibly. The new staff can get trained by the earlier staff who has received training. There is a need to look after the mental health of the staff and offer them peer support. The Staff will get training and feedback either one-on-one or in a group.
Conclusion
The objective of the proposal about health and medicine is to lower the incidence of HIV and STD among high-risk populations as well as to raise the knowledge and awareness among the sex workers. Basic information on HIV and HIV-prevention techniques and medical treatment is essential. Small teams and groups will work in neighborhoods carrying the higher risk of HIV, and these outreach workers should be individuals who are well familiar with the neighborhoods. A known face can build trust faster and convey the message with more conviction. Regular trainings will ensure that the outreach workers are getting the right information to educate their patients. Meetings are regularly held to study the outcome of the efforts and if the objectives are being met with.
