Good Example Of Literacy Essay
1. In your own words, define ectotherm:
Ectotherms are animals considered cold blooded that have their body temperatures controlled through external sources such as sunlight.2. In your own words, define poikilotherm:
Poikilotherms are organisms or animals whose internal body temperatures do fluctuate considerably caused by the varying environmental.3. Describe an insect’s tracheal system, including its function and its structure. How does a tracheal system work for an insect that lives under water?
The tracheal system consists of tubes that penetrate through the insect’s body. The tracheal have pore referred to as the spiracles. The spiracles are found on both sides of the insect’s abdomen. Air enters the tracheal that is further divided into smaller tubes that end into the insect’s body tissues. Oxygen is exchanged from the tracheal into the body tissues while carbon dioxide is expelled from the tissues to the tracheal system. Each abdomen has a system of tracheal and spiracles. For insects under water, breathing is done through breathing tubes or biological gills through the diffusion process. 4. How would you expect the metabolic rate, and oxygen demand of an ectothermic, poikilothermic animal to vary with external temperature?
When the temperatures are low the metabolic rate and oxygen demand for the ectothermic poikilotherm reduces significantly. When the temperatures are higher and favorable to the animals their oxygen demand increases since the rate of metabolism will also increase. 5. How would you expect the metabolic rate, and oxygen demand, of an endothermic animal to vary with external temperature?
Thermoregulation in endotherms is not dependent on the external body temperatures as these animals are capable of controlling their body temperatures. The metabolic rate and oxygen consumption, therefore, does not vary depending on environmental temperature changes but on body activity levels. 6. How does the availability of oxygen in water vary with water temperature?
The amount of oxygen dissolved in water decreases whenever the water temperatures are higher and increases when the temperatures are relatively lower. 7. Using your answers to 4 and 6, suggest a hypothesis for whether you expect stoneflies to experience greater oxygen stress in cold water or warm water:
Stoneflies will experience oxygen stress in warm water since the temperatures will be relatively higher meaning their metabolic rate and oxygen demand will be higher yet the available oxygen dissolved in water will be lower. The hypothesis is therefore, the higher the water temperature the more difficult stoneflies find to metabolize. 8. In your own words, define ventilation rate.
The ventilation rate refers to the number of exhalations and inhalations that a person has within a specific time period which is usually a minute.
