Proposal demands
The main aim of the proposal is to increase the number of Casino Royale employees under the union. Currently, the casino has 5500 employees of which 3500 are unionized. However, the unionized members are only housekeeping staff, front desk clerks, valets, cocktail servers and concierge. However, kitchen staff, waiters, room service staff, bartenders, clerical officers, reservation clerks and dealers in the casino are not unionized. The union would like to have all the employees unionized.
Apart from increasing the number of unionized employees, the proposal would also like to negotiate for both increased pay and better healthcare plan. There is also the issue of the 4-6 year contract after which employees will have to re-apply for their jobs. The union would also want uniform allowance, sick leave, vacation leave and a job-security clause included in the new contract. This will ensure that the employees are better protected.
The current contract puts the maximum number a full-time employee can work at 40 hours. The maximum number a part time employee can work is set at 25 hours. The union would also like to negotiate for any extra hours above those set to be declared overtime. The pay for overtime will be 50% above normal pay per hour.
The fall back position is to have the number of unionized employees to at least cover servers and all the other non-union staff. These are the most vulnerable of the employees and they need the union to fight for them. The basic pay per hour of all the employees will be increased by $0.10. This is expected to cost the casino $728,000. This is purely based on the 3500 workers working 40 hour weeks. If this was to be done, the cost of the whole increase would cost the company just over $1 million.
The company should also consider taking the bronze plan health insurance for its employees. This will provide additional benefits than the existing skinny plan, such as hospital care. This is expected to cost the casino $1,200,000 without employee contributions. This bronze plan would however cover the employees only and not their families. The company should also offer the option of purchasing the silver plan, which offers the same benefits as the bronze plan but covers the employees’ families as well, if the employee decides to pay the difference in premiums.
The union would also like to have the job security clause included that would ensure that lay-offs were conducted by order of seniority. This would help to assure the employees that their contracts would not be immediately terminated after 4 years as is the case currently. The final position is to have the company agree to unionize its lowest employees, servers who earn as little as $4.50 per hour. The company shall also be required to purchase the bronze plan for all unionized employees.
The demands in this proposal are reasonable enough for the company to consider. If the company decides to agree to the terms of the union, the expected additional costs to the company would equate to just over $3,000,000 annually. The company is willing to spend $2,500,000 in trying to meet the demands of the union. The difference would be made up by mutual agreement. However, the company cannot afford to have the workers go on strike. They know the union has organized successful strikes before and the bad publicity would simply divert customers to competitors. Casino Royale cannot afford this because of less than expected revenues and the strike would leave them facing up to $500,000 a day in lost revenues.
