Cell phones of the past; talking about the very early ones were sold in numbers that are unmatched rather unmatchable by the cell phones made today. One reason of this is that in those days there were only a few models available, whereas now there are thousands of makes and models of cell phones to choose from. So the market gets rather divided. Here are however the most popular cell phones made and sold ever (Swider, 2015).
Nokia 1100 remains the most sold cell phone every created. 250 million copies of this highly popular cell phone were made and sold in 2003 through 2005 during what time the company Nokia kept on releasing newer variants. The cell phone that sits on the second place as being the most popular and hence the most sold cell phone ever made is another Nokia, this time 1200 that sold 150 million copies after its release in 2007. Samsung 1100 shares this spot with 150 million copies sold too. At the third place, Nokia 3210 and 3310 jointly sold about 250 million copies when they were released in the mid of the first decade of the 21st century. It can be assumed that both these variants sold 125 million copies a piece (Beavis, 2014).
Motorola RAZR sold 110 million copies after its release becoming pretty much the first non-Nokia country to have sold so many. A very old Motorola called the Star TAC however sold 60 million copies that were a huge number back in 1996 when it was released. In the modern era, iPhone has been the highest sold cell phone that has been introduced after 2009. A total of more than 200 million copies has been sold in the models 4, 4S, 5 and 5C. Add the 3GS to that, and the count goes well above 300 million. Taking all the Galaxy Note models together coming from Samsung, total 50 million copies give or take a few thousand have been sold ever since the release in 2013 (Telegraph, 2015).
Statistical Analyses:
The average of the number of copies sold of all these cell phones is 135 million. This is the central tendency. As it can be noticed that the very early cell phone models Nokia 1100, 1200 and Samsung 1100 are the ones that have been sold way above average. The reason for this is that in those times there really were not as many competitors as exist today. Though they do not sell in huge numbers, still their effect on the declining sales of the other manufacturers is substantial. There were lagers back the too, an example of that is the 1996 Motorola StarTAC that managed to sell only 60 million copies in a wide open and gobsmacked market. The variation in the number of cell phones sold back then is enormous therefore.
In the modern day, Apple iPhone is the dominant seller, surprisingly, the annual sales of iPhone skyrocketed after the death of Steve Jobs the Apple founder and CEO. The level of variation in the modern day cell phones is also very high. Taking Apple and Samsung Note, one can see the difference that the former sold four times as much as the later, making the variation very high.
