Brenda was suffering from cancer for several years. At the age of 26 she was first diagnosed with cervical cancer. She had been leading unhealthy lifestyles apart from entangling with an offensive marriage. Later on, she was also diagnosed with breast cancer twice. After having battled with the disease for fourteen long years, suddenly one day she was told that she had only one more year to live. An inner awareness motivated her to view her disease as a gift and a new possibility. One evening while packing her things for the hospital, Brenda wondered which books she could take along with her other belongings. Her entire life was fabricated around reading right from an early age. Books had always solaced her during testing times, and choosing the right books now was the only important thing Brenda could do to herself. Through reading inspiring books she connected her body, mind and spirit and healed herself miraculously. Brenda Michaels is the bestselling author of ‘Reading by moonlight’ in which she narrates how the habit of reading saved her life. Reading books has a therapeutic value to heal one’s mind and body in turn. Luckily, I too have the habit of reading books. I have a passion for books, and it is my ever favorite hobby. I love to be surrounded with books, and books are my first love. Books make me happy, excited and a better human being day after day. Like Brenda, I too believe books have the magical power to influence one’s mind and thereby facilitate one to acquire knowledge about the world toward discovering the unknown potential of his or her mind to achieve great things in life.
My reading hobby started even before I went to my kindergarten. My mother, an avid reader herself, introduced me to this magic world of books. She herself had a great collection of books of diverse genres neatly stacked in our study. Her collections included children’s books, novels, books on cookery and housekeeping among others. As a little one, from the days my mother narrated me stories like Alice in wonderland, I have personally felt my area of understanding widening while reading books. In fact, I began to see things with my mind. My mind when fed by knowledge through the printed word was able to see things faraway in distant lands, which my eyes were not able to see. Another interesting thing is books have the supernatural power to take me to the past era; for example, while reading books on the World Wars, the authors take me to the past even before my grandparents were ever born. Thus, with the help of books, I started exploring the world and time through my mind at a very young age.
At school, by the time my personal book collection at home reached one hundred, I realized the advantage I had over many other fellow students. I had an improved vocabulary when compared with many of my classmates and I fared well in grammar as well. Unlike many other children, I never felt any difficulty in getting along with other students since books have educated me in advance about diverse situations and people. Since I had the opportunity to connect events and behavioral patterns of others I found it all the more interesting to explore new people and circumstances. Reading also improved my concentration and memory retention skills, apart from immensely influencing my communication skills; I was a regular participant in cultural events at school. By the time I reached my junior high school, I began to realize that my reading habit has significantly improved my confidence.
Amid my school assignments my reading habit also flourished. My passion for the printed word never allowed my precious hobby to receive a set back at any point of time. During my senior high school, I discerned that I was quite confident about my future vocation. My vocation appeared to be something closely linked to my passionate hobby of reading books. Apart from reading Victorian and other historical classic novels, I started reading autobiographies of great men. Benjamin Franklin, Viktor Frankl, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi became my favorite leaders and motivators. I also began to read many self-improvement books to coach myself to choose a meaningful profession. I have personally experienced that changing the thought process gives solutions to many problems associated with relationships, as often taught by great leaders. Like author Brenda who survived cancer through reading inspiring books, I also understand the healing power of books. As I can see now, I would love to choose a profession that would give me an opportunity to give to the world the knowledge I have acquired all these years out of my reading hobby; I would love to inspire and motivate youngsters to find the treasure of their life between the pages of books arrayed in school libraries and book stalls.
The more I read and acquire knowledge, the more I realize that I still have a lot to know, and understand the necessity to learn throughout my life. Thus, books keep on widening my horizon and exposing me to entirely new areas and possibilities. Of late, reading is bringing out the writer in me. Reading has always inspired me to think, and recently I have started to give life to my thoughts. Yes, I am into writing articles of diverse interest, which I share with my friends and well wishers. I aspire to start my own blog wordpress one of these days to share my ideas to the world. I also started dreaming about becoming a writer and novelist one day. I do hope that my interesting hobby of reading will show me more and more new avenues in the future.
Since my childhood, through books I have travelled around the world, and my own new worlds filled with fun and fantasy. Books continue to teach me to dream and expand my horizon. Books keep on showing me what is good and what is evil. When I read I exist most of the time in a different world and in an entirely different dimension with diverse possibilities. There is sleeping, there is waking and there is unlimited fun of all kind while reading books. Books create a parallel universe for me in which anything is possible. Books have really taught me who I really am and what I can become. As true friends, books continue to show me new avenues to explore my inborn talents. Above all, I experience books lightening up my mind to see things clearly. One day, I dream of going to an island which has nothing but books and a serene ambience to enjoy them all, and of course to write my own books.
