Every person who possesses the so-called analytical turn of mind, very often has a helpful habit of observing everything which takes place around. Such observational skills will then become useful in different living situations; the inclination to the observation develops memory and makes it flexible in order to contain a lot of details which are always important forming the whole. Speaking about my ability to observe and analyze, I can’t call myself the Sherlock, though even my observance sometimes acts in my own favor.
Today, I want to introduce the result of my observational skills. As I am a student, the place of my research is the narrow courtyard before the nine-storied building of the dormitory where I also live. During all seasons of the year, this yard is full of students who gather in separate companies communicating with each other. Especially, one can see the animation here along toward evening when a majority of students return after the second session in the university.
It is clear enough that all people, who gather in the yard, are students, but then the whole is parted into separate pieces. First of all, here it is necessary to mark the language used and the fact how students feel in the environment around them. I will illustrate the above-mentioned describing my company of friends-students with whom we often spend time in the evening sitting and communicating in the courtyard. Nearly in all cases, we speak an informal language. As I have observed, a lot of us are able to adapt to various communication styles; mainly, it depends on a single person. Our company is not big and includes four people, every of whom has own social background and upbringing. For example, Maria, who is, at the same time, my group mate coming from the family of school teachers, always tries to correct our way of speaking; it doesn’t work in many cases, moreover, it is getting clearer and clearer that her own style of language starts to change. It doesn’t mean that Maria tends to use some sort of swear words or something; just every day her too official and correct language becomes more similar to that one which is peculiar to young people – the usage of slang and jargon. In that way, we can see that while being in the common company where everyone has similar interests and topics for communication, the participants, with time, accommodate themselves to each other.
The other interesting detail of interaction of my dormitory friends is their leaning to change topics of conversation when they notice and know that someone else can hear what they are speaking about. In different situations they choose the separate lines of behavior. I need to specify that the building of dormitory is also the place where it is located the administration of the students’ hostels and often, the representatives of this administration come outdoors to take some fresh air. With strangers who don’t belong to our company my friends, in a moment, change their behavior and the topic of the conversation. It can be explained taking into account the generation gap between us and members of students’ administration. Such way of behavior of my friends tells that they want to hide what it is not assigned for ears of others, especially for people of older generation. For me, their wish is understandable, because I often do the same. Doing this, I can say, we are subconsciously afraid of what may think others about us.
In other places, save the dormitory front courtyard, my friends and I interact also differently. The place here plays the determining role. The example of this interaction can be illustrated on the example with our attendances of the library. As we do it every week, we should adhere to rules which are instituted there. We come to the building and show our students’ ID cards to the porter, and then we decide where to go further depending on the literature we need to obtain. It is obvious that my friends and I never speak loudly or run along the passages. It demonstrates one more time that despite any inner or outer factors, people, who think adequately, will find ways to be and behave the same or similar in various situation; chiefly, in order not to differ from others, because people, in general, very often don’t like those who may have motives to call themselves different from others.
An interesting detail concerning my observation is the conclusion about the role of interaction in the determination of such factors as culture, age, gender and beliefs of those involved. It is easier to review every member of social interaction separately and then to compare them in unity. The process of interaction can show the information about the person from different angles. For instance, my friend Maria, who I have mentioned above, is the example of good breeding and politeness. She always tries to have an influence on the others and to correct their language and behavior if she thinks it is inappropriate for this or that situation. It can characterize her as cultured and well-educated person, though, sometimes, Maria is thought out to be a bit boring with her edifications. Despite these things, we also perfectly know that, at the same time, she is right along ready to help everyone who needs it without any garish generosity. To tell about Maria’s age, on the one hand, is quite easy, because all students in our university group are nearly of the same age. On the other hand, often her seriousness and painstaking attitude to everything, she does, add several years to her young age. As I have too observed, Maria has strong beliefs in reference to a lot of things. For example, she is convinced in that we need to listen to only classical music. While trying to affect us with her beliefs, she doesn’t notice how the others affect her.
My other friend Ben is the exact opposite to Maria, being a good social mixer. He is the so-called ringleader who always unites our company, making our friendship even stronger. Ben is the eldest in our company, but, at first, we haven’t guessed anything about his real age. His cheerfulness and easy temper turns him to be a homeboy among all people who surround him. Ben believes that it is useless business to thrust his opinion and interests on others. Every meeting of our company occurs in cordial and friendly climate owing to Ben who can make us smile and to say good words in support.
Irene, one more member of our company, differs from us with her covertness and abruptness. While communicating with us, she is never frank enough. All of us feel that and now and then we think, Irene behave totally differently in every single living situation. This deduction is made because of corresponding arguments linked with Irene. Once I witnessed the situation which somewhat made clear the world of our friend for us. My friends and I were sitting on the bench in the dormitory front courtyard and taking snacks. My sandwich was with meat which caught sight of Irene. She asked me what kind of meat it was and when I answered that I didn’t know, Irene seemed to be indignant at my answer. In my turn, I asked her about the reasons of such indignation and we learnt that she is Muslim and cannot eat pork; her resentment was called by the fact of my ignorance concerning to the kind of meat I ate. Taking into account this example of social interaction, one can satisfy oneself with the fact that religious beliefs take an important place in lives of people. All people have to be tolerant to others without instructions how to live correctly and what to choose. I think that situation showed the wrongfulness of Irene’s reprimand, because she didn’t display her tolerance towards my religious beliefs which allow me to eat pork. In spite of this unpleasant story, we could come to an agreement of being indulgent to each other.
Every person in my company has their own personality. It means that we are all different or we think so, though according to my own observations, it is not often when extremes meet. Much more frequent people subconsciously find those who can share their interests and understand their way of life. Proceeding from this statement, I make a conclusion that my friends together with me have more in common than we think.
The role of spectator demands from a person a lot of patience and the ability to analyze everything seen rightly. The observer should stay impartial, but, in this case, my observation could not have been so meaningful. As the member of the process of observation and the person who has conducted it, I can say that the interaction affects everyone involved and, in their turn, everyone involved affects each other. Such effect may be not clearly visible, but it is undoubtedly present. Concerning me, I have also been affected owing to the interaction with my group of friends. According to my observation, I began to treat people with more understanding than before; my mixed company taught me not to yield to the first impression about a person which very often can turn out to be deceptive. To learn more about the real character and essentiality of a person, one needs to interact with him/her for at least some period of time. It is obvious, that people of the similar age understand each other much better; it is proved on the example of my company. Being the representatives of one generation, we interact having nearly the same interests and life style. Of course, there always exist discrepancies, though, in the course of time, they can become less perceptible changing into something neutral.
The role of interaction in lives of people cannot be overestimated, because people live in the society and different kinds of interactions are indispensable part of their life. Despite common norms of behavior and communication adopted in the society, every person has his/her own inner norms, rules and beliefs owing to which he/she takes place in the circle of people and things around.
