Health depends on lots of factors that can be changed under the influence of a person, thus health can be produced. Now medical industry due to its importance is one of the fastest-growing industries in the world economy.
There are many factors that contribute to the production of health. Victor Fuchs in “Who Shall Live” mentioned that such things as “rising living standards, the spread of literary and education”(p. 31) also played a great role in the production of health. Now such factors are nutritional improvements, public health, medical technology and development of medicine.
Changing environment and lifestyle also has a great influence on the public heath. The whole world now cares too much about environmental protection by all means. All these “green” technologies also contribute to production of health. Such issues as health and education are now seen as investments and people do think a lot before doing something unhealthy.
“Medicalization” of health care contributed largely to the development of health economics. Mass production of pharmaceuticals that are now available for every person made great shift in the health care issue. People are get used to take pills out of preventive measures even before the disease is obvious. That is why drug production occupies the highest level into the whole health production pyramid. But the question of contribution of pharmaceuticals is doubtful because such diseases as AIDS or Ebola still cannot be cured.
In my opinion, health care now looks more like business than public necessity. Providing medical services now becomes highly profitable. Production of health is devoted rather to making money than making people healthier and happier. Here now comes a question whether mankind had reached its limits of medical progress or not.
