The book of Charles Baudelaire’s The Painter of Modern Life is composed of essays which portrays the different perspectives in the contemporary period. Some of the essays included in this book tries to describe how the people give great importance to cosmetics, how the manners of the people changes through time as dictated by the changes in the society and even how people find happiness. Though these literatures do not show other perspectives, the issues included can be easily confirmed and recognized through the actions made by the people in the society of contemporary time.
The genre of the book is in a form of manifesto as it contains advocacies leaning on the perspective of the author and the artworks he considered as he writes the book. It was written using persuasive devices as if it was trying to change the perspective of the reader or at least influence them. Also, the book was a collage as the essays are not directly related rather the author has made a story to relate each subjects one by one.
The references used by the author of the book are the stories of people living in contemporary times. These are not heavily theoretical but adequate to purpose. As mentioned above, the literature tries to persuade the reader’s perspective as it made use of the real stories of people sharing the same perspective with the author. Some of the ideas that somehow made me wonder are the way the author said that women nowadays are relying on cosmetics to prove their beauty, and that people have been finding happiness from material things. I do agree with these provisions since I can see and recognize within the society I belong how true these happenings are.
